Aye Peter,

Jon said
Hi Peter,

Ideal made a number of components for Mototrans machines, including handlebar grips and fuel taps.

The main body of the Ideal fuel taps have a M16x1 thread that screws into an adaptor with the M12x1.5 thread, which in turn screws into the tank.
They easily come apart but you will probably need a sheet of Viton 3mm thick (rather than 2mm ) to replace the seal, together with a hole punch.
Note that there are two small locating lugs cast into the main body of the tap to orient the seal in the correct position and prevent it turning when the lever is operated.

Whilst it does not create the "small locating lugs" Jon describes, I have found that a "wad punch" is ideal for cutting the seal from the Viton sheet you propose to use. They are readily available and reasonably priced. I have used a 14mm wad punch for manufacturing the seal in the later MKIII widecase fuel taps, with success.

Good health, Bill

Old car antenna make good light duty wad punches, you get several sizes from one aerial.

Hi Jon,

Many thanks for your as always accurate and useful knowledge. There's a local plastic place that has Viton and I hope to get some on Monday. I'll have a crack with my hole punch.

This is exciting: I might be able to get the Vento running this week!

Cheers

Peter.

I have some cork-cutting tools made of brass.
They can also cut gasket paper and rubber sheet, but I don't use them with a hammer.
Rather, they have a T bar - push & twist to cut. The cutting edges stay sharp longer.
To resharpen they are put in a pistol drill chuck, used with a bench grinder.
It would be easy to make if the wanted size tube is available.
Or, look up "science cork cutter" for commercial ones.

I got some Viton sheet the same thickness as the original fuel tap seal, cut out a circle, punched the holes, and it still leaks. It's not leaking from where the valve body screws into the part that screws into the tank, because I put some yellow PTFE tape there and that made no difference. I think the fuel valve itself is leaking.

Is it possible to get any new fuel tap to fit a Vento?

Thanks

V frustrating. I made several new seals from 2.5 and 3mm rubber, all leaked. I carefully checked the valve body for cracks, it looks sound. Unless there's further advice I'll have to get a new petcock. Lacey's have a 12x1.5mm unit that I hope will fit.

Edit: it turns out Steve Goode has a Montessa unit for 12 quid that should fit.
