That's not an uncommon problem,Craig.
I've welded up quite a few widecase stands that were like that or even worse.
They always seem to either crack in that location or bend in a similar place.
Narrowcase stands aren't much better, late Mototrans ones excepted.

The stands are ok as long as you don't kick start when still on the stand. The 450 requires quite a hefty kick and I always stood to the left of the machine to do it. It's a bit awkward but with practice it can be done.
