Greetings,
i'm a long time motorcyclist/enthusiast; and just got a 1965 single..I believe its a Diana(oh no...here we go again!..lol), its a 5 speed, DM250 89176 w/ matching sterring head sticker , it states 250 D3. so i'm thinking it may be the later series Diana?? it doesn't have the SCR subframe loop, and also doesn't have a horn mount, as well as no key ignition, bitsa?? the SCR fender??interesting clues that fellow members could assist with.. I've been lurking about concerning Mikuni carb swaps, and I'm ready to swap my beat Dellorto, but wondering which size carb to go with: 26mm. or 30mm..??? its the small valve head i believe.
>> My other bikes are a 1978 BMW R100S, thats kinda trick, and a 1986 Yamaha SRX600 project.. that I converted to electric start...
>> last Ducati was a 95 900SS..
i'm really enjoying it, and can't wait to get it into a more reliable ride..it's a beauty for sure..

hopefully that link will work, i'll search to see how to insert pix..(sorry, my first post..), i'm realizing that its tough to identify without decent pix, !!!! hah! , but will add asap..
Cheers.

Re: Intro and nooblike questions..
from the picture, it looks like a proper diana!... at least tank fender muffler tach, carb... that would be nice to make it run with the SSI carb...what's wrong with it?
Should have large valve head too if it's a 5 speed, is the carb a 27mm or 29mm?

Re: Intro and nooblike questions..
____ The motor-number confirms it's possibly an early 1965-model, but a real 1965 model-year Mark-3 has 29mm SSI-carb and rear-sets & tool-boxes, so this Duke must be a restoration-project.Edray wrote: just got a 1965 single..I believe its a Diana,

Also starting for the 1965 model-year, Mark-3 models then began having "M3" stamped on the motor-case next to the motor-number ! _ I assume yours doesn't have that suffix ?
__ What clue has led you to think that your M3.Duke is a 1965-model and just a mere "Diana" ??
What colors are the wires which are within the black conduit-cable that exits the motor near the kick-lever ?
" and also doesn't have a horn mount, as well as no key ignition, "
____ That's std.issue for all n-c.Mark-three models.
" SCR fender?? "
____ Yes it does look to be so.
Also the speed-o drive-cover on the front-wheel is the older/pre-65 type (without the fake air-scoops).
" its the small valve head i believe. "
____ A real 1965 Mk3.model would have the Mach-I top-end and-thus the large 36 & 33mm valves !
" i'll search to see how to insert pix.. "
____ Try clicking-on the 'Upload attachment' button (right-below the text-post window), and then see if you can't figure-out the rest of the pic.posting-process on your own.
____ Welcome to our Duke-singles w.stie !

Re: Intro and nooblike questions..
Thanks all,
It is a SS127.
.and the inlet is about 27.85 or so..sorry for the slop there but not seeming to get an exact measurement w/ my dig. caliper on the port; but from my previous lurking i assume that it is the small valve head.
plus no rearsets, n clip ons..and shrouded shocks, also, no M3 stamped on the case. small carb. so not a Mark 3..
I'll include a shot of it when I bought it,
http://edray.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Du ... 0230-M.jpg
it has clubmans on it, you guys can see that the cables are lookin kinda long.. I installed some R90S bars i had, and still the cables are a tad long, so i'm surmising that the orig. bars were the stock tall Diana bars??, so that falls into my thought that it is a "standard" Diana?? ( am i getting that right??,)
Thanks for chiming in Bob. I wanted to ask about your comment: "That's std.issue for all n-c.Mark-three models. "
what do you mean by " n-c" ??
and i'm thinkin its a bitsa too w/ that SCR front fender..also, i'm a bit confused about the headlight not having ignition keyholes, and the lack of the horn mount lug( seems like competition frames may not need horn mount lugs??)..ii know that there was a lot of shuffling parts, tanks, frames from bologna as well as the stateside berliner side..just wondering..
i thought i should add that the odometer reads 2900 miles, it was last registered in 75, and had an oregon license plate stickered 69..its in great orig. condition, frame paint, shocks, all the aluminum..
its a fantastic bike and a great historical ride, but i will admit i need it to be a reliable, easy starting rider.
Hence; the dreaded Mikuni carb; been lucky i've got really smart capable help, exracers, very familiar w/ Miks, so will be able to fab a manifold, cables etc.
thinking, as someone(bob?) posted before that small valve head would be better w/26mm, and large head would be better w/ 30mm..so getting ready to order..
Bob: will check on that wiring question.will work on your pix posting suggestion thanks.
Thanks again all.

____ It seems you're right then, it has the small 36 & 33mm valves and it's not a real 1965 'Mark-3', but rather a late 1964 'Diana Mark-III' !
" so i'm surmising that the orig. bars were the stock tall Diana bars??, "
____ No-doubt that's indeed the case if your Duke was imported into the U.S. by Berliner !
" so that falls into my thought that it is a "standard" Diana?? "
____ No, the 'Diana 250' was only made as a 4-speed model !
Yours is a 'Mark-III' (apparently) !
" I wanted to ask about your comment: "That's std.issue for all n-c.Mark-three models. "

____ Well, "n-c" is simply short for 'narrow-case', and is often used to denote that a Duke-model is not a WideCase -(w-c) version.
" i'm a bit confused about the headlight not having ignition keyholes, and the lack of the horn mount lug.. "
____ Again that's std.issue for Mark-III versions of the Diana model-name line.
" small valve head would be better w/26mm, and large head would be better w/ 30mm..so getting ready to order.. "
____ Why not choose a 28mm carb ?
Duke-Cheers,
-Bob

Re: Intro and nooblike questions..
first: crazygreg; yeah, i'm thinkin that it would be cool to run the dellorto, but the slide's a bit scuffed up, i cleaned the jets etc, but stil had a huge flat spot in accel,leaky... maintenance/tuning for sure here, guys, i know , but..
plu; money into dell vs. money into modern carb??
but seems like from all my local opinions, and from previous posts here, Mikuni conversions seem the way to go. as i mentioned i'd really like a reliable, easy starting rider.
My last kick start single left me kickin, sweating pushing kicking..sweating..
hey bob .. great info thanks..
i had heard that 28s weren't available..but since your reminder, i called Sudco, to see bout that, lo and behold; Mikuni discontinued them ten yrs ago, but now they're available again..rejetted,reslide for 179 plus shipping..
and; checked the wire colors. they're light cream yellow, green and black..

" 28 Mikuni
rejetted,reslide for 179 plus shipping.. "
____ That seems rather high-priced.
You might find such (intended for a Honda-XL250) listed on eBay for under half that amount.
Or something like this... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mikuni-TM28-28m ... a4&vxp=mtr
" the wire colors. they're light cream yellow, green and black.. "
____ Then it seems that someone has already replaced the stock alt.wires, as they're supposed to be 1-red, 1-white, & 1-yellow.
People also often screw-up which wire goes to what, and often connect-up the lights-wire -(red) to the ign.coil !
Since your alt.wire-colors are not stock, it begs the question of whether your Mark-III is still wired-up correctly !? _ Does it's lights work ?
Hopeful-Cheers,
-Bob

Re: Intro and nooblike questions..
Very nice, I would not change anything. To make it easy to live with the carb and igniton will need to be changed, It will reduce in value, and your mum may want to borrow it. Still its your bike. If you must go for ease of use ,i would convert to 12v ,likely need a diferent alternator, rectifier , battery ,coil, pointless ignition with electronic advance, or Mach 1 advance unit, re-wire ,switches etc. As it is its one of the best singles They made, a time capsule.
