tanks

Postby Kittay » Wed Mar 27, 2013 9:21 pm

I'm putting together a 66 Scrambler that I inherited and am debating on which tank to use. I know the overall look I want is the cafe road race with a front fairing.
What I am curious about is the main difference for the mark3 and mach3 tank. I've seen a mark3 that looks like the mach3 tank, and another that looks different (Mark3D?)
http://www.nationalmotorcyclemuseum.com ... C_2668.htm
(Sorry having trouble on the ipad making an image on here- but this is the tank I'd love to find)
Does anyone happen to know any dimensions for either style of tank? Also good sources to find them?
Thanks
Tami

Tami, the tank in the picture you attached is an early widecase Mk3 250/350/450 tank. The other models you are referring to are probably the Mark 3 and Mach 1 (no such thing as a Mach 3) which are narrowcase models that are similar to your scrambler. Diana and Diana MkIII tanks are similar in design as are certain 200cc tanks. Briefly, the Diana type tanks are of larger capacity than the Mark 3/Mach 1 tank. There are several different tunnel designs depending upon the year/model. Any of these tanks will fit on your scrambler frame but the rear mounting is different since these tanks are longer than the scrambler tank. All of these tanks are pretty rare. They will turn up on ebay from time to time, less likely at swap meets, might find someone offering one on a Ducati site such as this one. They do come up for sale but it will take some effort to track one down. Matt

WideCase Mark-3 Tank

____ The tank you've particularly referenced is a wide-case style 1969-70 'Mark-3' model. _ It differs from the 'Mark-3D' model in that it has silver-paint where the DESMO-version has polished-chrome.
This particular tank-model/style has often been referenced-to as the 'coffin-tank'.
__ Matt has indicated the tank to be an "early widecase" model-type, however the 'early' -(1968) w-c.model had twin filler-caps (which is highly sought-after !)... A later-version like that which you've referenced, has been listed on eBay, usually for over 600-bucks !
Sorry to say so, but I figure you ought-to get-real & drop the dream of finding one of such tanks for your Duke-project, (as it's not a straight-forward bolt-on job [onto a n-c.Scr tank & seat fitment-arrangement], anyhow).

____ BTW, welcome to our ever-expanding list of registered-members !

Hopeful-Cheers,

Hi Tami,

Ducati tanks command a lot of money and I don't know how robust your budget is. A Mach 1 tank in good condition (good paint, no dents) came up on eBay UK a few months back and I think it sold for over US $1000.

One of the things that creating a cafe does for you is that you can look for a tank from another maker that might fit. Generally speaking, tanks from Italian brands of the same era such as Benellis, Gileras, MVs, Parillas, etc. will fit or come close to fitting.

Take a look at eBay item 151013450879. Something like that might fit.

You just need to shop like crazy, ask for extra photos so you can be reasonably sure there are no dents, imagine the tank on your bike, hope the price stays low, and take a chance. You will still be in for a repaint so keep that cost in mind when buying, and if the tank doesn't fit you can put it right back on eBay to sell it (hopefully break even or come out ahead) and try again. Try searching internationally.

If you really want a Ducati tank it will just take you a little longer to find one and cost you more to buy one unless you just get lucky.

Post a picture in this thread of the tank shape you are looking for. You'll have 250+ sets of eyes on the lookout for you.

I could not find just the right tank for my project, so i decided to make one. I laid this up in carbon fiber. It took some time but the end results were really worth the trouble. Finish came out so good my painter only had to clear the center to leave the carbon "revealed" as you could not do any work that would not show. For the cafe' look there are several non stock options. AeroTech makes several and Sids has a couple of glass tanks. Another forum member has a source in England for a really nice looking glass tank and seat combo. I will try to look up the thread that it is in. Really depends on your own taste.

Have fun.

The other "thread" for the English glass tank and seat is under PHOTOS ( Hi, new on here ) by lloydy1
Sorry I don't know how to idenify the link any better.
I patterned my tank shape after the orange bike in the photos.

Absolutely beautiful.

Ultimately, one set of bodywork for my (slowly becoming not a) Monza will be full fairing, long tank and seat in CF. Excited to jump into the process of learning concept to end product CF production. I believe another set will be something aluminum, something polished and most likely from India...

Cheers,

Tom

so if I found an original tank, like the original attached image, what would the value be, or an expected price be?
Grantid the paint is not decent but no dents

About ten years ago I literally gave one of those away to author Tod Rafferty. It had no dents but was bleached by the sun and the area around the petcocks looked rusty.

In the circles I run in we affectionately call that the "coffin" tank as its shape is not un-similar to that of an old time coffin.

Keep in mind too that there are two versions of that tank, and the rare one has twin filler caps.

Neglecting the twin filler cap as you aren't likely to find one of those and they are very valuable, I don't think the coffin tank is very desirable. That's my personal opinion, and I state this at the risk of offending people on the list that have a bike wearing one of these tanks.

I would guess that today's value of a coffin tank in good shape but needing a full repaint would be around $300 to $400.

Before you hunt to hard for one of these tanks, I think you have a narrowcase bike and this tank is made for a widecase bike. I am not sure if this would adversely affect the front and rear mounting of the tank to your frame. Someone will speak to this issue I am sure.

I really like the way the coffin tank, as you say, looks. I think it would be neat to make a petite looking 900ss with the cafe style seat. The actual mounting would not be an issue as my boyfriend is very handy with welding and modifications. Would there be any issues aside from the actual mounting spots for running a widecase on a narrowcase frame?

I also like the Mach 1 style tank, but have had zero luck finding one of those. Are those apx the same price range?

Is there much of a difference between the coffin style and the Mach 1 size wise?
