Hi ALno, Some bike have side covers, the Mach 1 does not. It has tool boxes. I expect this is what you mean.If the boxes are to sit right in the corner of the frame the position and angle of the brackets is critical,I would find toolboxes before welding the brackets. My brackets were welded on at the factory ,and they needed packing to get the boxes right.

Graeme, We have a few very good painters and powder coaters in Akron. This frame is painted with a wet sanded primer, very glossy!
Al, I would take Bobs advice and wait to find the tool boxes before finishing the frame. This is the second Mk3 that I have had to fabricate/repair the cut off mounting tabs. I can provide dimensions, when I have some free time.

I used my ancient Atlas lathe to polish the hubs. First big dimples smothed with a 2" Rolock wheel on a 1/4" die grinder, then mounted in the lathe. 240,400,600,2000 grit in succession, lubed with light machine oil.

2" x 3" sand paper pieces.

As sanded down to 2000 grit, left, then to the buffing wheel with emery compound.

Tom Bailey's book "Ducati Singles Masterbook Workshop Manual" has the drawings and dimensions of the brackets and lugs needed to install Mach1 style toolboxes on a standard frame. Page 150 - 151.

We farmed out some polishing to a local shop:

Fork build. A little Ducati bond to help seal the oil seals:

I cut a groove in the oil bush on my Bridgeport:

New oil bush is made to size of the turned down journal, .003" clearance.

Omega 74.5mm piston from Lacy Ducati (thanks, Nigel!)
Bore job by Bill Moeller of Bore Tech. One of the few 100% correct boring shops that I know.

Gears Timed.

Flat stones.
My surface plate is a marble tile from Home Depot, flatter than glass. The oil stone is used to prep all of the case gasket surfaces.

Kickstart back from chroming.

Image

More bits from the chrome shop, "white cad" for the screws, polish for the alloy.

The original carbon steel spokes and brass nipples were replated with "white cad", then I painted the spokes silver as original. 4 x .75mm tap makes quick work of chasing each nipple.

The spokes and nipples are stamped with "A", Alpina?

Lacing wheels.

Ready to drop in frame.

Always a tight fit for me.

Starting to look like something.

Image

Test fit rear wheel. Brake cable is original, the adjuster and end has been tin/zinc plated on my workbench, new sheathing is shrink wrap.

Image

Nice to keep original coil decal.

Image

Seat base and springs has been blasted and painted, the original cover cleaned.

Tires are the Avon race compound 80/90-H18 & 90/90-H18.

New sheathing on original tach cable is heat shrink tubing.

Sheet metal painted, rear fender and tail light installed:

Tank has base/clear red and silver, water slide decals and hand yellow pin strips:

Finished. Some small details to be corrected when we find some better parts (shock collars, light switch, carb paint, etc.):
