Re: Help with wiring please

Can I add to this ongoing saga?

I now have my new generator which has been fitted. Upon wiring the 6v coil there is a number 1 and 2 on the connections.

My question is; is there a positive and negative side or can you fit the wire from the points to earthier?

Maybe you could help me on this one Bob please, your input is much appreciated on these matters. I told you I am no good with electrics  Cheers, Dave

____ Oh but certainly of course !! _ Even if you weren't the one who started this thread !

____ Sorry, I-myself have no personal-experience with any of such aftermarket products, as I've ALWAYS been well satisfied with most stock-Ducati electricals.
I otherwise COULD no-doubt be of some help with your new-system if I could look-it-over or become educated about it's specifics.
But when you chose to go-down this aftermarket-road, you then committed yourself to only getting help from just the manufacturer and/or others who previously have also dealt with it's installation.
And without such qualified-help pre-known to be acceptably-available, it then should've been realized that such an endeavor should only be risked by someone with reasonable experience with such electro-mechanics.
__ I for one had assumed that you had a reasonable idea of what you'd be getting yourself into.
Perhaps Rick can further lead you down this suggested road, any hopefully to complete success.

Hopeful-Cheers,
-Bob

Quite simple the new generator really; I don't even have to get the kitten to do it! 2 x yellow wires connect to the rectifier, which is 6v or 12v depending on your preferred voltage. The red and green wires from the rectifier go straight to the battery positive and earth. earth to frame and positive to fuse box Generator is thus fitted and operational, battery charging. no worries! I am glad I could help you out on this one Bob.

I don't quite know were you get this notion from, as I have all along indicated the electrics side of motorcycling was not my strong point! It makes me wonder if you have actually ready my thread from the start.

My question was nothing to do with after market! it was concerning the 40 year old coil fitted by Ducati which I be-leaved was your territory. Which side is the positive and negative on the coil or does it not matter?

Can I thank you Bob again for your insight on this matter, as I have learnt something new again today!

I sent Dave(lloydy1) a PM with my cell number and email- we'll discuss aftermarket parts outside of the forum.

" we'll discuss aftermarket parts outside of the forum. "

____ But Rick, anything you two discuss on this topic would be of legitimate interest to others of us here !
Perhaps either of both of you may be nicely inclined to post a condensement of whatever you've found & determined to be worthy of note here, as well.

By: lloydy1...
" And I thought I was that person! "

____ Indeed you are, (I had meant that ANYone of us is welcome to add to this thread).

" positive to fuse box "

____ Did your new kit come with some sort of a "fuse box" ?

" I don't quite know were you get this notion from, as I have all along indicated the electrics side of motorcycling was not my strong point! It makes me wonder if you have actually ready my thread from the start. "

____ Of-course I've been all-THROUGH this thread from the beginning,
I had assumed the "notion" simply because you had seemingly so very unhesitantly gone-ahead & ordered your new system-kit (seemingly without any regard for any such concern) !

" My question was nothing to do with after market! it was concerning the 40 year old coil fitted by Ducati which I be-leaved was your territory. "

____ OH ! _ Well in THAT case, you were right to ask ME !
I had assumed that you must have been asking about something that came with your new-kit...
Ya-see the STOCK-ign.coil (which has a red-label), has it's two terminals marked with '1' and '15', (not "1" and "2" !) ! _ So I was therefore led to think you had a new/replacement part (which I have no knowledge of).

" Which side is the positive and negative on the coil or does it not matter? "

____ Many ign.coils, (instead of those stated numbers), have '+' & '-' marks for labeling their terminals,, however as far as an standard gn.coil goes, the only difference the polarity-connections make, is whether the spark goes up or down (TO or FROM the spark-plug's center-electrode) ! _ So therefore those ign.coil terminal-connections actually make no real/useful difference, (as you apparently suspected) !

" Can I thank you Bob again for your insight on this matter, "

____ Of-course you're welcome Dave,
and sorry for the misunderstanding !
____ Now it's wondered what you actually have for a "40 year old" ign.coil ? _ Got any pix we can see of it ?
Perhaps it's time that you also install a NEW ign.coil !?
__ BTW, are you intending to stick with the 6-volt or go-with the 12-volt option ?

Hi Bob,
I have attached a picture of the coil that I have.

Apologies for miss leading you I do have (1) and (15) on the coil and not (2) as I stated in my earlier post.

I bought a separate fuse box as there wasn't one included in the kit.

I had read a few write ups on the kit I bought, as I only wanted some thing that would charge the battery only, it seemed the right kit for the job and it is purpose make for the N/C single.

I do appreciate your input on this matter a great deal. After all it is only by talking to people like yourself with the knowledge and with experience which you have gained over time, that someone like myself can learn and gain confidence in these matters and in time I may be able to assist some one in my position.

Thanks, Dave.

____ So it seems you have a stock-coil after-all then.

" I bought a separate fuse box as there wasn't one included in the kit. "

____ If you'd like any guidance with hooking it all-up, then how about posting a pic or two of your fuse-box !?

" I had read a few write ups on the kit I bought, as I only wanted some thing that would charge the battery only, it seemed the right kit for the job "

___ I-see. _ I knew that there are several such kits available but, I'm unfamiliar with what-all comes with any of them.

" in time I may be able to assist some one in my position. "

____ That's a swell hope, and we all ought to be so inclined !

____ Hope you took some pix of your installation-job, so we can all see the involved work-job.
