250 kick start gears servicable?

Postby blaat! » Mon Apr 09, 2012 12:57 pm

Before I put my 250 case halves back together, I would like to get your opinions on these starter engagement teeth... they look like they are well worn to me - "IF" this is an item that always seems to engage properly no matter how worn then I will keep using them. I understand that the narrow case kick start is one of the weakest parts of the engine, so I would like to make sure all the components in that area are sound before reassembly. Sorry the photos are so-so.
Thanks.
Jim

" I would like to get your opinions on these starter engagement teeth... "

____ I've zoomed the two pix so that others may more easily check-out the teeth in question.
__ Anyhow, while those engagement-teeth may no-longer look like new, they still look better than many others I've seen which still worked just as they're supposed to.
So as they are, I don't really see any significant reason to not continue using them.

" I understand that the narrow case kick start is one of the weakest parts of the engine, "

____ Most of the common issues of the n-c.kick-starter arrangement were solved by the 1966-productions, (which seems to be the type of k-s.gears presented). _ Only thing is, the steel-plate which was meant to shield the alloy stop-boss (of the motor-case) from the k-s.shaft's hardened teeth-set (in the event of a kick-back),
was not really strong enough for it's task (and thus ought be replaced somewhat often).

Hopeful-Cheers,
-Bob

The gears are only available NOS (very rare, I have never seen them on offer) or used. I do not like the look of them but you may have trouble finding better.

Never, never flail away at a NC kick start lever. Use a deliberate slow motion at the start of each stroke to make sure the teeth have fully engaged. My gears are similar and I have not had any troubles.
