Tom,
Sounds like you have some good knowlege and success with the VM 26, I have a question...
Is your VM 26 the primary type, with the needle jet protruding into the venturi (about a 1/4 inch or so), or is it the bleed type, where the needle jet is flush with the bottom of the venturi? Or is it just the design and style of the needle jet that makes it a prymary type or bleed type? The primary type is intended to work on a 2 cycle, and the bleed type for 4 cycle.
Can I convert my primary type to a bleed type just by using the needle jet you mentioned?
Thanks, Bruce

This does not answer Bruce's question:

I am just throwing this Mikuni carb theory site out here in case somebody in the future finds this post as they try to resolve Mikuni issues...

Re: Where to buy Mikuni jets?
Bruce,
I don't know the answer to your question but if you go to SUDCO and down load their catalog it shows both. Mine is flush with the inside. This is actually the first one I have put on a Ducati. Those were the stock jettings but the only adjustment I changed was the idle screw. I have Mikunis on my vintage trials bikes and the Vincent but to be honest it is because jets are plentiful and cheap and pulling the carburetor is easy. I am not an expert on Mikuni, I'm just lazy.
Sorry I couldn't help much.
Tom

Thanks Tom,
Mine is a 250 monza. I have this (new) vintage mikuni VM26 taken from a new MX race bike in the late '70's
(2 stroke) i'll try your spec's in and see if it'll work on the Ducati...
We're about 80 feet asl here

Your local motorcycle shop will be able to sell you jets and what not for a Mikuni.
Your 061 main jet really made my day, thanks.

Yeah, I could have deleted my post and saved myself the embarassment, but what's the fun of that!
I'm putting an S81 in next to see if that fixes the problem, and I have an 081 in reserve.
