Steering head bearing source?

Postby JimF » Tue Jul 19, 2011 3:09 am

I was trying to do a quick and dirty job of changing to clips-ons by pulling off the top triple clamp, and yada yada yada all my steering bearings are everywhere but in the races.

Is there a common source for ball bearings the correct size?

I am not going to change to caged bearings - I went down that road and it was a nightmare getting the steering column extended.

Jim
I used to get bearings for steering head from Bike Nashbar, but they don't seem to carry them any longer. must be with the advent of sealed bearing becoming the norm.

try these guys.

Hi Jim

the bearing balls are 3/16 . i would try the local bicycle shop first

you need 24 balls for a race so 48 total

Jim...

Eldert, and Motomike are both correct... 3/16" Ball bearings. You could try your local cycle shop or bicycle shop, but there isn't one of either around me (aside from Domiracer, and I don't get to that side of the city very often) I usually get bearings from b.d.i. (locally) or vxb if i'm not in a hurry, I have dealt with Karey @vxb she is very helpful, they are in Anaheim, CA. That being said, if you aren't in a huge hurry/don't need them today, you could pm me your address and Ill send you the 48 you need free...I have a couple hundred at least, I usually buy them 100 at a time for any Duke I do, its just a common way to buy them. They are light, a regular envelope would do. Let me know if you want me to do that... Joe

Honda part number for 3/16" (#6) ball: 96211-06000. Other sizes available for such Ducati single applications as: oil pressure relief valve, clutch release rod, front fork damper valve, rear shock spring adjuster, kickstart pedal detent:
1/8" (#4) 96211-04000
5/32" (#5) 96211-05000
7/32" (#7) 96211-07000
1/4" (#8) 96211-08000
9/32" (#9) 96211-09000
5/16" (#10) 96211-10000
11/32"(#11) 96211-11000
3/8" (#12) 96211-12000
13/32"(#13) 96211-13000
7/16" (#14) 96211-14000
15/32" (#15) 96211-15000
1/2" (#16) 96211-16000

Probably pricier than other sources but if you need just one, this is a good alternative.

My local Ace hardware carries those bearings (and several other sizes). They are in the little pull-out drawers above all the stainless nuts and bolts.
