Trying to find parts for a front end

Postby sebouh » Wed Mar 23, 2011 1:49 am

Hello,

I got the following pieces together for a front end for a 1965 scrambler.
Headlight holders
$(KGrHqMOKm4E1T6VTMClBNbBOOkm1Q~~_12.jpg

Triple tree
$(KGrHqN,!jEE1nm77qKNBNbSYJtf5!~~_12.jpg

fork Wheel holders
$(KGrHqR,!iwE1MJ6kGIuBNbZewR,q!~~_12.jpg

All from EBay.
Now all I need is :
1. those silver covers for the fork springs.
2. Fork Tubes
3. Spings.

I really need help with the covers. Anyone know of a source? Anybody reproduce these?
Any help would be appreciated.

I may have the springs - but don't everyone else stop looking just because I said that...

I used to have several tubes - I may still have one left, but everybody that asked before you got the straightest and the least pitted.

The tubes can be straightened in a press, but the very little I know about the tubes is that they are "hard chrome" plated (whatever that means) so the pitting could be problematic.

I'll get back to you tomorrow about what I find in the garage.

No charge for anything I have that you want, you just pay the shipping.

____ So what's your purpose for replacing the superior fork-set that's already installed on your Scrambler? - Is it mainly because you wish to make it more like it was back in the days when you once owned such a DUCATI-model, or is it more because you think the change will make your Duke more valuable ?

Hard chrome is designed for wear resistance. It is the same chrome as decorative chrome, but plated thicker. Hard chrome is usually applied directly to steel and not shiny. Decorative chrome is applied over nickel which gives it its shiny appearance. The nickel is usually plated over copper. The copper is polished to level the surface. That is why sometimes you will hear it called triple chrome plating.

Sebouh,

Since you stated this was for a 1965 scrambler I can only assume that Eldert's revelation to us that the lowers you bought were for a 35mm fork didn't brighten up your day at all.

But there is good news:

I have the springs!

But wait, there's more....

I have the silver shrouds that screw onto the fork lowers!

Still not happy enough?

The shrouds I have are currently screwed onto 31.5mm fork lowers!

I was going to write you this morning and tell you that you may have to accept the fork lowers with the shrouds as getting the two apart is a huge pain in @ss. The threads are very fine and you almost need super-human strength and a non-slip grip to get them apart. If I couldn't get them apart in 10 minutes I wasn't going to spend 8 hours trying to do it but rather send it all to you. In a cosmic twist of fate you need the whole thing.

Since Guzzino has the tubes (which will come straight and smooth) you should be in good shape.

You can PM me off list with your shipping address.

Perhaps you'll consider giving away the 35mm lowers someday to someone who needs them as a pay-it-forward sort of thing.

____ It's been quite disappointing that Sebouh hasn't been more forthcoming with what his thinking is concerning his rather nice 1965 Duke (which really isn't stock enough to remain a true "Scrambler" any more!) !
Currently I much suspect that once it's understood exactly what-the-deal-is, that then the desire for stock-type forks will be lost, (as stock-forks are only a drop-in-the-bucket towards full-restoration of his particular Duke!).
__ I highly advise at this point that any restoration-work of this project be put-off until after it's been realized that the vast majority of needed stock-parts can be obtained (without exchange for life & limb) ! _ For instance, there's little reason to bother-with installing stock-type forks, if ya can't first get stock-like fenders, etc. ! - (Has anyone-else here ever been able to find a stock-SCR rear-fender?)

____ I've brought-forth to-surface the original related thread which should remind the rest of us where my-own thoughts are coming-from on this, so please look-over that thread as well.
(And it would certainly be nice if others would chime-in with their very-own independent thoughts on Sebouh's intended project ! _ After-all, wouldn't YOU like some insight from others concerning YOUR-own Duke-project, before moving-onward with it !??)

Hopeful-Cheers,
-Bob

A related call for help for our 200GT resto: On p 96 of the shop manual, Fig 111 shows a "guide bushing" that presumably fits into the dust cover to keep the painted tubes concentric with them. Our bike didn't have these parts, which probably explains the scratches and gouges on the alumi dust covers, so I don't know what I'm looking for. Is this guide bushing made out of bronze, plastic or rubber??? Have any of us come across this part? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know the answer to the "guide bushing question"? My 65 monza did not have them? Unless we are talking about the metal washer that I thought went over the gasket. thx rob
