____ Here follows a link to a tool intended for pulling the primary-cover (more squarely/evenly) off-from the left-side motor-case & kick-starter shaft, (although not really an actually required tool for that job, as many who've discovered another-way already realize).
__ In the past I've made my own puller-tool (similar in purpose) but, not just for assisting with the removal of the 'clutch-cover' ! ...
If ya keep at least three of that cover's 6mm fastening-screws in place, then with ALL crankcase-center screws & bolts removed (from securing the crankcase-halves together), ya can then also use the 'puller-tool' as a much more useful 'splitter-tool' to split-apart the motor-case halves !

____ For within the USA, a couple years back I told Joe of 'bsanut' (also on eBay), about the possible dual-use of such a tool, for him to consider also producing (along with all his other offerings), but I don't know if he ever followed-through with such yet.
__ If anyone who has any spare crankshaft-bearing plugs, would like to know how to make a cheap-version of that tool, then please just ask and I'll then tell ya what I told Joe.

I've used a number of Dave's tools on my bikes (as do more and more of us in Aus). I've supplied him with a few measurements for roundcase twin tools a few years back. Good quality stuff, and for what you get I reckon they are very well priced.
I agree with Bob, you don't actually "need" that puller, or any of the other stuff here, and you can make up your own, but they are damn handy and work really well.

what i use to get the clutchcover off is a flywheelpuller for a Bosch ignition for a moped
there are dfferand versions . one has M22 X 1.5 thread on one side and M26 on the other side
you can use a longer bolt or get rid of the M26 thread in a lathe

Thanks for the link to the special tools. I had a look at the lineup - impressive.
Talking of "expensive" special tools, have a look at page 84 of Mick Walker's book Ducati Single Restoration - there's a photo of someone using a claw hammer through the clutch inspection cover to remove the clutch cover - looks crazy, but it does work!

I was made an offer (by a friend of Italian heritage) I couldn't refuse on the weekend. A set of about 20+ original Ducati service station special tools for singles and some more he's made up himself for $350. I was on my 250 MK3D at the time, so couldn't bring them home, but I'll do so soon. It seemed to me a very generous offer and although it duplicates a few aftermarket tools I have, I'm rather chuffed to have them. I went down to the nearest ATM there and then. He also gave me a near complete set of original bike tools for my 250 MK3D and a few other bits and pieces.
Had to do an unplanned raid on the piggy bank, but I felt it just had to be done. Some other things can wait.

Is there a trick to using the claw hammer? Do you jury rig some crap to rest the hammer on so as to put the leverage point on something else? Like the kick-start spline shaft or the frame?

Remove the oval clutch cover, insert the claw and gently pry. Assuming you removed all the allen screws, the side cover will pop right off. This technique actually works better than the "special" tool as it applies the force closer to the centre of the cover.

I had done the claw hammer thing years ago but had forgotten if there was some leverage point involved or not.

It's almost ideal. The claw hammer levers against the clutch body, and pushes back behind the primary cover.
Another way is with a slide hammer.
