I remember I had the same issue many years ago, making sure the selector drum tang was in the neutral position and the selector box correctly aligned… good luck

Just a thought…in my experience a second person is useful when trying a gearbox on the bench. You often need to turn the input and output shafts while trying to change gear so 3 hands are needed!
When operating normally, everything is rotating so the dogs will find their places easily. Not so when static on the bench.
(Apologies if teaching granny to suck eggs)
