Sprocket

Postby ranton_rambler » Mon Jun 16, 2025 6:15 pm

Any suggestions on either where to find a rear sprocket for my 175 with the earlier small hub/brake, or who could make me a custom one?

It has 4 pegs which engage with the cush-drive rubbers - see photo.

Aye Ranton,

My advice would be to have a quiet word, by email, with Nigel and await a reply. ;)

Good health, Bill

For a custom item, obtain a sprocket blank from an industrial supplier, with the desired tooth form (for example 428 or 08B) and number of teeth.
For a rear sprocket, it doesn't need to be a hardened type.
A competent metalworker/machinist/welder can make it fit your needs.

As Jordan suggests, obtain a sprocket blank. Looking at the picture it appears to have an offset from the mounting face. Maybe a wider section blank with the same pitch, and machine off the width as required would overcome.

Yes, it's got a slight offset Brian.
My facilities here (or lack of) mean that I'd need to get someone to do the job once I have a suitable sprocket.
It's not too bad yet, so I might look for another to use as a donor so I can keep my bike in use.
I believe the same hub was used on Guzzi Stornello so there may be a possibility to find donor down that route.

Aye Ranton,

Talon Sprockets, from whom Nigel obtained the rear sprockets for the Ducati spares business, might be worth a shout.

I hope that you are able to find something, Bill

I didn't notice the offset.
A possible way to deal with it is to keep most of the original sprocket.
Remove the teeth and steel down to the long curved slots, leaving 6 "spokes".
Remove the "opposite" from the new sprocket blank, so you have a band of teeth that fits around the original sprocket, and weld together.
Rebates on both parts could help ensure there's no wobble in the finished item.

If the Stornello is the same, this appears to be available here (certainly looks the same)

I reckon the fixing details of the Stornello are the same but they seem to be flat rather than offset as the Ducati version is. But might provide a donor centre if nothing else turns up.

Or, put some spacers on the pegs that engage with the cush drive - doesn’t look like it needs much so shouldn’t compromise the engagement badly.
