Craig,
Did you ever read Cycle's road test of a 900SS by Cook Neilsen? What a brilliant mag Cycle was! Cook (who knew a thing or two about fast Ducati twins) wrote of the 40mm carbs: 'running the kit on the street makes no sense at all, the exhaust is noisy and the engine has no protection against dirt, and the increased straight line performance is not enough to allow you to go hunting for certain one-litre Japanese bikes'. I believe that Ducati fitted the 40mm carbs for competition purposes, to allow tuners to really open up the ports and extract maximum potential from the engine.

They certainly do something but none of that something is desirable (however they were standard on my '82 so I'm not taking them off)

Re: 450 carb recommendations
Ta, Colin. Good to have confirmation from someone as august as Cook!
(One thing that I didn't mention before was that the early Dramahs (up to 1979) had small diameter inlet manifolds anyway. So fitting 40mm carbs to those - as done by Coburn and Hughes in the UK - was no more than a (cynical? ignorant?) exercise in vanity).

These were a standard equipment for the Moto Guzzi V65 models, in RH and LH version. New and used from https://www.gutsibits.co.uk/pr/TheShop/index.php?q=dellorto+phbh30+carburettor&f=d&Model=14&search=SEARCH

Carb in the link is a direct fit to the standard 'slip on' manifold. If i have any issues with the original carb this is most likely the route ill go. Although 32mm would be preferred!

Re: 450 carb recommendations
I’ve just purchased a Dellorto PHBH 30AS - does anyone have experience running one of these on a 450 that could give me guidance on initial jet set up?

Re: 450 carb recommendations
Aye Ian, was the seller not able to provide any guidance?
If you are starting from scratch, I would advise that you contact Eurocarb directly, before parting with any dosh and see what they say.
This is the link to the Eurocarb website page specifically dedicated to the Dellorto PHBH 30AS carb.

I am sticking with AMAL these days, so no use to setting up data for Dellorto's.
Best of luck and good health, Bill

Re: 450 carb recommendations
Thanks Bill, yes I'm got it from Eurocarb and they advise using what it is initially set up with and going from there (they have provided extra jets). I was just wondering if anyone had direct experience.
