Petcock advice

Postby Alex450Jupiter » Thu Jul 28, 2022 5:16 am

My first Duc, '74 450 Scrambler, and just de-rusted the tank. Here are my petcocks, and I need to clean/rebuild or replace. The square one looks original, "Setti Vignola OM" with first 3 holes blocked and top hole has a deteriorated metal screen visible inside. The other is an "Ideal" stamped May 86. Are parts available to rebuild these? Possible to find a second Setti Vignola? I prefer original parts, but do I just buy two new ones and forget about these?

The one on the left looks original as you say and Nigel has them at https://laceyducati.com/ducati-parts/fu ... c-174_244/

The one on the right looks to be very similar to those on my Darmah and other Italian bikes of the late 70s, early 80s.

12mm Setti Vignola taps are available from Ducati Vintage Store.

Other makes of the square 'Sugar Cube' type of tap were Orlandi and Paioli. Repops are fairly widely available e.g from Nigel, spares too sometimes. (Or you can make your own sealing washers out of a piece of convenient rubber).

if buying new, just check the size - 10/12/16mm - and that they are screw IN, not screw ON.

I'm fairly sure "Ideal" was a Spanish manufacturer.

If it were me, I'd buy new. Leaky petrol taps are not desirable ...

As Ventdue says:
(Or you can make your own sealing washers out of a piece of convenient rubber).

Make sure that the "rubber" is Viton sheet of the correct thickness and not rubber or nitrile sheet. You will find the ethanol in the fuel will degrade the alternative materials and likely cause more leaks/blockages in your fuel taps and downstream from them! ;)

Good health, Bill

Hi all, jumping in on this thread rather than starting a new one re petcocks. The tank on my 1974 250 Mk3 has 10mx1.25 taps which are leaking. Struggling to find 10mx1.25 petcocks anywhere. Most suppliers have 10mx1.0 or 12mx1.25. Has anyone ever seen 10x1.25 for sale anywhere?????
