Hi Graeme / Veloduke, my meter is a Klein CL1000 and when set OHMS it automatically scales between OHMS, K Ohms and to M Ohms.
With my leads connected to the red and green wires it moves to its highest scale (M Ohms) and then reads OL. (cant see anything) If I disconnect the red lead and touch it to ground I get a reading of around .3 Ohms. (reading the resistance of the green wire to the stator and referencing it to the bikes frame /negative on battery)
Hi Hans, there seems to be quite a few guys running this stuff on Ducati's, if you could repeat the CDI cold continuity checks I would think others would find it useful.
For now what I really want to know is: is this green wire and red wire wired off each end of my charge coil. If it is then I would think I must be able to read some resistance. I know from experience that even it reads resistance doesn't mean that the insulation is still good and wont' leak when put into service. I would think a proper test is likely resistance tests followed by disconnecting and meggering to check insulation?
Thanks guys, I appreciate your help.

Ya at this point I'm hoping for a broken wire in the harness or something easy of course. This is all their wiring, .... I just plugged it together. If I'm being 100% honest, I was a little disappointed in the quality of the wiring, connectors and harness materials used. The two connectors my meter leads are onto weren't crimped very evenly or well....., but they aren't the source of my problem right now. I think I'm likely going to have to pull everything apart from my meter down.

You know your going crazy when you quote yourself....

I found this video to be very good on different types of stators and how to do simple checks. (hope I'm allowed to share this link on here, if so let the guy know you liked his video, I did)

This is a mates alternator showing the self generating ignition coils, red and green wires.
I would assume that there should be a circuit there.

Well, the meter looks fine to me. Auto ranging with 40 Mohm FSD should be good.
Cheers

I do not know this MM manufacturer, as it is not present in Europe, but I totally agree, anyway. It looks respectable, and the datasheet is excellent.
On Thursday 26th, I have again access to the 250SCR with the Electrex system, and am able to carry out some measurements on the stator coil connections, the ignition coil and the CDI box. Pls stay tuned ...

Thanks Hans, I'll wait before I tear into it. I do think that's where I'm headed though

That sure looks like what I remember. I took detailed pics of all my parts,... but never back them up. (you can guess how the rest of this story goes

The picture was helpful, its the first one I've seen where I can make out the wires on the coils. I'll wait until hans confirms some of findings on that running unit before I start tearing into it.
Thanks again.

Is FSD (full scale deflection) a useful term for digital meters?

Well, maybe 'at the range limit' or something might be more applicable, but I like FSD, and you know what I meant!
