Steering damper spring

Postby kaysystems » Fri Apr 15, 2022 11:32 am

Hi

The 250 single parts diagram shows a compression spring on the steering damper rod.

Where, exactly does this go? Not where the diagram shows right under the top nut?

thanks

Yes, under the top nut. There should be a sort of circlip on the shaft near the top nut that the spring compresses against. I improvised with a metal sleeve loctited in place to stop the spring

I think it's an anti-rattle spring.

Thank you - I've been missing that circle for years. Now it makes sense

Take extra care to ensure the knob is tight on the shaft ( nutlock?) and there is a splitpin below the friction assembly ,otherwise it can all fall into your wheel. Been there ,done that. very exciting.

Yes, I lost the split pin. The first time was 45 years ago!

I assume the 'circlip' is like a star washer that is just pushed on, as there is no groove for a traditional circlip. I bought my bike in 1974 and have never had a circlip - I've never needed a steering damper either!
