[quote="MotoMike"]Looks like i should have a timing wheel. I see what appears to be a nice one on ebay from a tool shop in Australia. over a hundred bucks though.
I see that it has o ring and oil seal to keep the case sealed while using it. I see EuroTrash has the arbor without the wheel. not sure if it can be used for strobe testing.
G'Day Mike,
I bought one of these timing wheel and his stuff seems to be well made, but as Nigel in a post on this topic I have notice a bit of run out on the disc..

Re: lets talk about timing wheels
When i first started working on my NC 250 i really wanted one of the fancy timing wheels with the crank mounted pointers, but could not justify the cost. I set mine up with a cheap plastic disc. After a few re-times and using the bike the only thing i would buy would be the basic crank pointer which would make checking the timing very simple and quick with a reference mark on the outer case and a strobe.Riding the bike and plug condition tells me if all is well and small (and reversable ) adjustments to the timing i make by adjusting the points gap. Moving the points plate is far too coarse and unpredictable.Save your money.

Re: lets talk about timing wheels
The timing figure on my narrow case with the 28deg adv unit does not appear critical, some well respected advice ranges from 32 to 39 degrees! .I suspect that the best power would come with about 38 degrees however 10 degrees static would make starting too exiting, Untill i can modify the AAU i settle for 5degrees.Adjusting the points gap bigger by a couple of thou seems to advance the timing by at least 5 degrees or more, so I dont really need to mess with piston stops or disc's once the initial settup is done.It seems to be fussy over fuel and so i stick to one brand of standard fresh fuel. I have tried the top grades but indigestion (rich) set in.I dont spend long at full throttle as my roads dont allow it, perhaps its just as well at 50 years (the bike , i'm much older!!.)

Re: lets talk about timing wheels
recommended static on my 450 is zero. from my limited experience with it, not having a compression release, I expect that to be a good recommendation. Of course not having used a timing wheel, I've no way of knowing where it is set. Mike

Re: lets talk about timing wheels
the modified CD with the downloaded image could work, but I was not happy with it. resolution at that size is not ideal. I ordered a disc from Motion Pro. got it yesterday. good quality. just need to make the 6mm hole into an 8mm to accept the bolt. thanks for all the help.

Another solution:

I installed a plug right over the flywheel. Degreed the flywheel and now checking the timing is very simple.

a cool idea. I'd like to see a closer shot of that thing. And I looked at the whole album. Looks like you are pretty serious about your Duc mods. thanks for sharing.

thanks again. I really enjoyed looking your albums. And appreciated the resolution that allowed me to zoom in and really look over the bike. Each image brought to mind new questions. What a beauty. How do you use it? Looks like a racer, but then I see street legal elements. I'd love to see a thread where you take us on a tour of the Bitsa Cafe. Again thanks for sharing.
