250 Narrowcase - repairing damaged case

Greetings,

I recently retired and am starting to take a look at my long dormant projects to remind myself what they need.

One of them uses a 250 narrowcase engine. Somewhere along the way the engine was damaged;

I'm guessing that this isn't the first time this has happened and I'm wondering the best way to fix it? I haven't even figured out what that feature is there for yet but I'm hoping it's a relatively easy fix. This will not be a show bike, it won't bother me in the least if the repair is obvious.

It's a plug in the oil pump pickup gallery leading from the oil filter. A part of the manufacturing process.

I'd weld it.

But I would await confirmation from another on here as I have been wrong in the past!

Agreed with Geordie, it is a plugged oil gallery which is part of the manufacturing process. There is no particular need to remove or access the gallery and therefore a safe acceptable repair would be to weld it over. There is plenty of material in the area and little to chance of distortion. I would suggest cleaning the cases thoroughly and lightly cleaning the immediate area with a small carbide to expose clean aluminium. It would be best welded professionally by Tig welding and the casing should be preheated before welding for best results.
