Transmission gear dogs

Postby HMBAtrail » Tue Aug 17, 2021 4:55 pm

So here's a question. Does anyone have a picture of a gear dog that is rounded off to the point of unusable in a race bike compared to one that is in good serviceable condition? I have the trans gears sitting here but am not fully sure if they are rounded but OK versus too rounded. I'd hate to build up this motor only to discover I have a gear popping out.

My Ducati singles racing friends told me the rule of thumb is that the dogs could be rounded off up to 1/3 their width, and still be serviceable.
Careful shimming, to a higher standard than ex-factory, was considered essential to improve engagement during shifts.
The dogs have angled working faces, which tend to pull themselves together under load.
