Jordan, Yes it has an Ign / Charging light as standard fitting, I have converted to a 12volt system, with a Electrex generator and reg/rec which has the charge light facility.

George, your offer of a copy of the procedure would be much appreciated, would it help if I PM you with my E-mail address.

Ian, my thoughts re getting an MOT, it would confirm the machine does exist, with a record of the frame number, and is in a roadworthy condition, presumably this will help with the process.
I need to find a Ducati mark specialist , who is registered with DVLA. and hopefully not too far away. The DVLA site would be very helpful.

Hello Brian,
With regards to an age related registration, the Ducati Owners Club offer a service. As I understand it, they are recognised by DVLA, so if they state that your bike was made in year x, DVLA will accept that.

This should be the list of acceptable clubs. DOCGB & VMCC are on there. I got mine by a fluke - managed to speak to a helpful guy at Ducati UK.

Jordan, Reading Geoge's post on his wiring, prompted me to check the Ducati wiring diagram re the ignition light, the light is wired directly to earth, so it would be on continuously, making my above comment incorrect.
In view of the meagre output of the Ducati generator it would seem a strange arrangement.
I have made a complete new harness, incorporating the original light as a charge indicator.

Thanks Jeremy and Ian for the information re the DOC machine dating facility, I think this is probably the best way to go.

I think you'd better be getting on with that engine Jeremy, as you have only got four years to go. :D

Thanks for checking that, Brian.
It's mostly out of curiosity, but arranging for a simple charge indicator for a permanent magnet alternator could be handy to know.
Aermacchi did it with a couple of diodes and a resistor evidently, on their Harley-Davidson 350 single 4 stroke model, but I haven't been able to replicate it.

It's interesting that the design of the singles, once established back in the 50's, did not change much for another 2 decades.

Jordan, the Electrex RR 163 I fitted has a charging light facility, as to it's internal circuitry, sorry I have no idea,

I think that Taglioni would have liked to make improvements, and when you look at the design of the 750 engine, he knew where they were needed, but Ducati were always strapped for cash, and could not afford to change very much. I think that the fact that there are so many little Ducatis being raced, in spite of them often being more than fifty year's old is testament to the basic soundness of the design.

It's kind of the opposite of what the Japanese were doing: they'd have a new engine design every 5 minutes.
