maintenance books

Postby MotoMike » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:37 pm

In preparing to sell my Moto Guzzi, I collected up the workshop books I have acquired over the years. Several books are not published in any high zoot slick manner. Some are written by folks who have for years worked on the bikes and transfered their knowledge to the printed page. Of these books a few published by the Moto Guzzi National Owners Club and are collections of the tech articles from their news letter. What I liked especially about these is there are lots of parts substituions for things like regulators, switches, lights, starters, and such that can be sourced from automotive and less costly alternatives. One called Guzziology by Dave Richardson is about 3 inches thick and very extensive. Together these books make a pretty complete if not concise gathering of Guzzi knowledge.

So then, I'm wondering if anyone is currently working on a draft copy of "MonoCylindriDucatology"? If so put me down for two copies.

a vender at the antique motorcycle swap meet this past Labor Day weekend told me that the "Ducati Singles Restoration" by Mick Walker was being produced again, but he was currently out of stock. I have not been able to confirm this. They are still going for crazy money.

Mick Walkers books reveal him as a jack of all trades and master of none.

I found Mick Walker's Ducati Singles book a very light read.

In my opinion I believe that Mick's books are light on technical content and facts, peppered with inaccuracies and his books suffer in America from some national bias that I believe is a reflection of the author's citizenship.

Often times I get the content of Mick's SIngles book and his 'Singles Buyer's Guide' book mixed up in my head, but I think that whatever he doesn't know about the American market with regards to Ducatis in the 60's and 70's he'll be more than happy to make up. Who knows, maybe it's me that doesn't remember.

Anyway, I have all his Ducati books because I want to ingest all I can on the subject. If I held out for a book about early Ducatis with no misinformation my book shelf would be bare.

Here is one on eBay, and a kind of rare hard-bound copy at that. No telling what the reserve is though....
