New charging system options

Postby tobydmv » Tue Dec 03, 2019 8:07 pm

Howdy gang, its been awhile since I last posted. My 250 NC scramble is currently sitting in the shed and its cooled down enough now where I can try to work on it. This seems to be a seasonal routine :)....Anyway, Im in the market for a new charging system for my scrambler. I had originally fixed the stock stator coil short but its died again and i'm tired of playing with it. I researched a rewind and if I remember correctly, it was about $200 to rewind the 6v stator coils. The mag recharge was probably another $50, so maybe $300 in total to rewind/charge the 6v system.

I am wondering what my options are. Do you know of any other charging systems on the market? Has anyone retrofit a monkey bike or chinese alternator setup? Later widecase alternator? Not sure what the taper is on the ducs but should be easy to measure. I plan to keep the stock points setup and use either the scrambler AAU or the monza AAU depending on what charging systems are available. I'm leaning towards the Lacey alternator setup with stock AAU and points. What are your thoughts for this old scrambler? I would love to mount a NOS Aprilia 130 unit I scored on ebay.it for a song so more watts the better maybe...idk yet. This wont be a show bike but a holiday scrambler, bar crawler type bike, maybe the distinguished gentleman ride or two...

Options:
1. Rebuild stock coils and recharge stock rotor, about $300 USD
2. Lacey ducati 12v alternator and r&r about $300 USD
3. **Maybe a cheap monkey bike alternator?**

Other distractions:
1960 FB Mondial 125
1980 Morini 3 1/2
1975 Morini 3 1/2
1987 BMW 325i

I've fitted a complete Electrexworld system, the same that Nigel supplies and can vouch for it.

I can now fire up my 175TS first kick on a regular basis and with the electronic ignition I don't have to faff around with points.

It all fits straight on and the instructions are clear and accurate.

I know other systems are available, but this is the only one I have direct expert of.

Hope this helps?

Yeah man, thanks for sharing your experience. I'm leaning towards the alternator from Lacey, which looks like its from Electrexworld.

Just be aware that I fitted a complete system as I'd already had the original 6v alternator professionally rewired but then continued to chase an elusive ignition problem around and replacing coils, leads, points etc.

Nigel Lacey then recommend that I just change the who system, as it would be quicker and cheaper than replacing component by component.

Did that and never looked back!
