After rebuilding the engine, I started it up today, fired up on second kick, running fine, ticks over reliably.
Whilst on the stand I though to check the gears, couldn't click down is there was crunching, was able to select up quietly but ony one gear, could not select higher. So it goes from neutral up one ok but no more and down selection from neutral is crunchy
I don't know which way the gear pattern is on this bike, I am assuming first is down one from neutral.
New uprated clutch from Lacey Ducati, adjusted ok. Bike has the std rear set.
I think the gear selectors in the case are ok as they seemed fine on assembly with all in good condition.
I did open the selector box to clean and lube but must have got the assembly wrong.
Any advice appreciated
Regards

Re: rebuilt engine, gear selection and crunching
It sounds a bit like your selector is 180 degrees out.
Remove the selector box and change down until you are in the neutral position. The gearchange is one up, four down with a conventional gear lever.
You may have to turn the selector drum on the side of the motor to the neutral position too. this is anti-clockwise as you look at it from the RHS.
If you have refitted the selector box with the selector in the fourth gear position it would engage 180 degrees out and exhibit the symptoms you describe.

Re: rebuilt engine, gear selection and crunching
Thanks for a speedy response Jon,
Will remove and check as you suggest, most likely I assembled wrongly...I hope!
I probably have the selector boss in the wrong position as it only selects up and down once.
Regards,
Alex

Re: rebuilt engine, gear selection and crunching
Sorted now, thank you Jon.
I have only run through the gears on the stand and seems to be good
I had all upside down as you thought.
Totally different from what I am used to, gear lever on the wrong side and shift pattern upside down.
Regards

Re: rebuilt engine, gear selection and crunching
I have 3 bikes with 3 different gearshift setups. Nearly fallen off 2 of them when stomping on the brake to go for a shift. Not done it on the 850 Guzzi yet, but only because the rear brake brake is so bad I reckon.

Re: rebuilt engine, gear selection and crunching
Once you get used to 1 up 4 down right side it makes sense and feels better than the modern setup.
If you don’t use the rear brake you can’t go wrong until you are used to the right side change.

Re: rebuilt engine, gear selection and crunching
Depends what you’re used to I suppose. I’m a bit accustomed to using the foot brake as my Guzzi SP has the linked brakes, so that’s the main brake to use. On my Ducati 175, the front brake doesn’t put the stop light on (no switch) so I like to use the rear to show the light in traffic.

Re: rebuilt engine, gear selection and crunching
yep, but have to try get used to this great bike.
Hitting the gears instead of the rear brake is biggest concern but thousands of others manage so I should too.

Re: rebuilt engine, gear selection and crunching
Done a short test in the street to check all gears, all good, changing and selecting fine.
It will take a while to get used to the rear set footrests, I stood on the gear leaver on first take off :
