Re: Rims and Tires for a Narrow Case
Reviving this topic...
Anybody ever measure the width a known set of stock of Mach 1 rims? I recall the OEM parts catalog says something like 18" x 2-1/4" for both front and rear rims. The 2-1/4" doesn't match up exactly to any of the WM standard sizes (WM0, WM1, WM2, etc.), but it must have been a standard size.
2.2" is the outside dimension of a WM0 but that seems too narrow.
2.15" is the inside (tire bead) dimension of a WM3 but that seems too wide.
Anybody know what they were definitively?
Thanks!
Jim

For what it's worth, I have a note that a 2 1/4" rim is equivalent to WM1.
I don't have a source for the info, nor am I certain it's correct.
Are rim manufacturers able to help?

Wait, the note is written down? That means it's documented in print. Oh, it's gospel now. Especially since I'm sitting on a set of WM1s that I want to use for just this purpose
Makes sense. Looking at photos of racers of that period, they used some dang skinny wheels.

Hello Jim and Jordan,
i have a link from a german wheel specialist:
http://www.swc-maier.de/wissenswertesfelgen.php
scroll down to the end of the document,
there are the WM sizes explained.
In the table above you see the size of the tire ("Reifengröße" resp. "Reifenbreite") an the size of the rim ("zulässige Felgengröße").
The WM-Sizes are old sizes ...
Also WM1 = 2 1/4 = 1.60
the 2 1/4 isnt a mass that you can find at the rim ...

Jim,
I get 1.675" between the beads on a M. Baruzzo rim from a Mark 3. Ever so slightly wider than a WM1.

And ever so slightly, (.075 inch,) is a ever so slightly under 1/8 inch.
Sound about right?

I agree, the 2 1/4 does not seem to mean anything, except that it is "2 1/4".
