1957 125S questions

Postby WayneO57 » Tue Nov 24, 2015 7:01 am

Hi Folks
I'm new here.
I have just started my first restoration.
Having lots if problems finding information about standard setup of resto.
Bike is in very many pieces, still in boxes but I have started.
I would like to know if anyone could confirm bike is 1957 engine number is *201374* & frame is DM201228DM.
The numbers are 1957 according to BevelHeaven log but I have a UB20BS carbie which is for a 1958 according to Mick Walkers book.
Does anyone know the original form of the rims?
Both mine are in very average condition & are aluminium so their form is unusual and I cant find any identifying marks for manufacturer.
Is this an original tank cap? Nothing I have seen looks close.
Also what did the original front hub look like.
I have a feeling that I have 2 different sets hubs real has 7 ribs & is flat
Front is 5 ribs gradually increasing to the centre, it has front & rear slot vents & is 177 mm in diameter.
Will ask more questions as I start hitting more snags

The front hub looks right- it should have an external, removable speedometer drive gearbox- the later hubs had cavities for the worm and worm gear cast into the right side of the hub.The 7 fin front hubs are wider, and the later 125 hubs were 160mm diameter brake drum, I think.
I've never seen a fuel cap like that- would have expected the 'bayonet' style, but your cap is a 'Supercortemaggiore'- fuel sold by AGIP, and the AGIP logo is also engraved into the cap, so it could be from the factory- would be a rare one.
The best way to determine the year is from parts- especially electrical- lights, switches, etc.

You can see the six legged dog logo painted on the bench out front- quite a gas station.

I have a gas cap like that, was on a Gilera tank. But parts like gas caps were bought in from numerous suppliers in Italy and used by several different manufacturers.

Thanks Guys
I knew I had seen the 6 leg some where but couldn't place it.
I think I should pay more attention to the Formula1 sponsors, as I just saw an advert on fox for the next GP
The engraving looks way better in the pic than in real life.
It would be great if it is worth something as this rebuild is going to be done on a very thin shoe lace.
