No. Have a look at the attached, Tony. The advance unit (in green) is mounted on the end of a drive shaft (red). The shaft has a shoulder which mates with a corresponding slot on the advance unit. The shaft is driven by a gear (part # 640) located on it by a woodruff key (# 020) and is itself driven by the oil pump gear (which is driven by a gear on the crank).

The advance unit gear and the oil pump gear must be meshed together so the small dots machined into their faces line up. Look closely, and you can see this in both of the photos. If this wasn't done right, that may be the cause of your problem ....

Hope all is clear ... :? :)

Thanks to all for info, here is the news!
Yes the advance mech had moved away from keyway as described by ventodue when I was fiddling with points base and generally blundering so the ignition timing was 90 degrees out, pulled out advance mech and replaced in the correct place, viola!!(spelled wrong for amusment )the thing runs, gapped points to 16 thou. but could still see and feel a misfire , I was using one of those spark plug caps that shows the spark happening so opened up the points a bit and the misfire almost disappeared. these are new points and condenser so still to delete that slight problem, I think Ill advance ignition timing by small amounts in the hunt for more power and use plug chops to watch for overheating, 16 bhp is almost pathetic but a cam and piston are beyond my budget.
Tony.

Jari just looked at your link to the dutch condor club thanks for that, the condenser is not on the points base plate as per standard duke arrangement but up at the coil, I had noticed a condenser up at the coil which I had thought was something to do with suppression of radio wave interference like in cars and stuff, these bikes were built with stealth in mind or so Im told which would explain the almost complete lack of noise from the exhaust too.

Seems you're making progress, Tony :D.

At the end of the owner's manual that Hans posted a link to, there are two wiring diagrams. One shows the condensor connected directly to the coil and mounted up high - "underneath the seat", is what the description says. So like yours. The other has the condenser in the 'conventional' place, i.e. on the the points plate.

No idea why/what's the difference ... :?

What plug are you using, Tony? Should be a NGK B6HS (or equivalent, e.g. Champion L86). Also check the condition of the HT lead. Take the cap off, snip a few millimetres* off the end and refit the cap. Also, it never hurts to change the cap .... ;)

Note: Millimetres, Tony. None of this inches stuff! :o . Same goes for the points gap - no 'thousands of an inch' involved. This is an Italian motorcycle, remember! (Well, Spanish/Swiss at least ... )

(I'm just teasing you, if you haven't guessed ...)

Thanks for all the advice,
I refitted the new coil I had removed previously and with a new plug lead and plug and removal of the points mounted condenser its a first time starter!
A run along to the local shops and back confirmed extreme lack of power, does anyone have a good used scrambler cam and or piston? this thing is a slug.
