Race Cams

Postby Kthomas » Tue Jul 21, 2015 1:39 am

Anyone familiar with the two race cams that Megacycle offers ? Anyone used the Full Race ? If so what did you think ? Thanks

Did you have any bottom-end with the X-9 ? Were there any problems like short life span on the components or ?
Thanks

Hi Bob

cams where made but i dont have one in a running engine so i dont no the performance of the added camlift.

if you are looking for a grey Mach 1 camshaft Nigel Lacey had a batch made . so that would be your best bet .

what engine are you building and where are you using it for ?

a race camshaft in a fast road engine is no fun to ride in traffic .

about lifespan on components dont use the valvespring setup Megacycle sells . to hard on the rockers and camshaft
to much seat pressure

for a full race engine i would use valves with a 7 mm valve stem and use lichter valve springs .

I think I am going to use the 564-00. It is for a race bike.
Thanks for your help
I have often heard that the best overall race cam was in a mototrans (vento maybe ). Has anyone ever made any of those. Is this true ?

Hi Eldert. What changes did you make to the timings/lift of the new cams.? How do the megacycle cams compare to my 250-F1 cam ?. If your new cam has extra lift wont that mean you will have to use hard springs to keep it under control at high revs.

____ Bob, where were you back when Eldert posted his related news (March,27-31) ? - (See his old post at this link... viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1821&p=15244#p15219 )
Eldert's-spec.cam.jpg

" Eldert What changes did you make to the timings/lift of the new cams.? "

____ So far, Eldert is no-doubt sure about the amount of increased lobe-lift (that his custom-made cams have over the std.M1/gray-type cam.model). _ However since Eldert hasn't ever yet further responded about my concern as to whether the camshaft-maker (whom he had chosen to employ to produce his ordered cam.specs), had actually accurately constructed the camshafts to faithfully fulfill his requested cam.specs,, I'm thus afraid that Eldert still has yet to personally check-out the particular valve-timing figures (which his custom-cams actually provide).

" How do the megacycle cams compare to my 250-F1 cam ?. "

____ I wonder about such comparison myself as well,, but although I'd expect superior/modern metallurgy, I have doubts that any such aftermarket-made camshafts would also provide as much cam-geometry care (for the working-life of all involved components), as the D.factory-cams were given.

" If your new cam has extra lift wont that mean you will have to use hard springs to keep it under control at high revs. "

____ The amount of added lift which Eldert's cams boast, won't make any notable performance increase in a 250,, (but should indeed help-out in a 450).
__ A 250-engine was never meant (by the factory) to run with a F1-cam without also employing an extra-strong/F1-type valve-spring (at least for the ex.valve), (since 250-engines can rev so much higher) !
That you've gotten-away with revving your 250 as exceedingly high as you've purported to've done, means that you certainly ought-to also get-by equally-likewise with such a cam that has higher lift along-with reduced lift-duration (with earlier v.closing-times than the F1-cam).

" any bottom-end with the X-9 ? "

____ Most-any all-out race-cam is pretty-much worthless, even for general racing,, unless your intended racing is expected to keep the engine-revs constantly near red-line (where such excessively wild cams can only then provide their relatively slight power-advantage [just during high/top-RPMs]) !
If rather racing on a race-course where 1st.gear is expected to get much repeated use, and straightaways are rather short,, the minimal*HP.gain of an all-out race-cam (* only achieved just during top-RPMs), then can't much make-up for the (consequential trade-off) loss of low-end/mid-range torque (that's needed during the lower RPM-ranges which must occur when repeatedly accelerating through the gears).
