Ducati 160 oversize piston

Postby MayerMR » Fri Jun 05, 2015 7:47 pm

Guys,

I'm working on restoring a n/c 160 Monza and though I have a once-over piston, my machine shop is telling me that the rust from the rings are still causing issues. Does anyone know where I can find a 61.25-61.5mm oversized piston/rings or whether that 175 replacement cylinder liner on Lacey Ducati would work for my 160? I suppose the other option is to look for another cylinder, but ebay is dry right now on 160 parts and there is always a risk with the old stuff like that as well all know!

Lastly, I'm *really* looking hard for a rear brake pedal/spring/shaft. There is one one ebay for about $100 but dang that seems high! Does anyone know if the n/c 250/350 pedal set up would work? Lots more on there and much cheaper!

Thank you!

-Matt

Matt,
I compaired 5 brake pedals ( 3 250's and 2 160's ) and they are all the same, so are the pins.

George,

Thanks so much! That'll save me a bunch!

Now on to the piston debacle! Any words of wisdom there?

Matt,
I have a 160 cylinder, but don't have any idea of size/condition. I'll dig it out and clean/measure it.

BTW, my co-workers say I have "old man wisdom" , but I think the "old man" part is more accurate.

Thanks so much, that would be wonderfully helpful if it's in good shape! Let me know what you'd want for it!

Matt,
I'm sorry but I don't think the cylinder will do you any good. It measures approx. 61.75 and is pitted in the bore.

Tell your machinist to bore the cylinder until it cleans, then send your current piston to a piston maker and tell them to duplicate it in the diameter you specify. The result will be a modern, high-quality piston with high-quality rings. A modern, lighter weight 'slipper' style piston would be ideal. Call up some piston makers and talk to them about it.

I'm running custom-made Venolia pistons in my BSA and Triumph. Called them up, told them what I wanted and the pistons arrived in the mail. If they don't have a blank for your Ducati piston they may want you to send it to them to use as a pattern.

The price wasn't much higher than the dubious off-the-shelf items available from typical suppliers.

Well shucks, I sincerely appreciate the effort though!

Nick,

That's an interesting option and one that I had not considered. I'm coming across most pistons in the $130 range. Is that about the range you were quoted as well?

Thanks!

Matt

Call them up and talk to them. Tell them what you're doing and what you need. Can't remember the price. And heck, if they can make you a piston why not take your cylinder out as far as is safe, those 160's can use every extra cc you can get!
