You would need to make your own mounting plate or redrill the stock one. A 12V conversion is also needed. The Dyna has a large dwell and therefore consumes a fair amount of power, so I would advise using the stock coil.

I emailed them asking if they do a system for the 250, and they replied saying no. maybe the 750 system can do it, but if they don't support it, I'm not keen to be the guinea pig.

Maybe I should bit the bullet and go with powerdynamo. Like you say, not cheap.

We've just fitted a Dyna S into a 750 Sport today which has refreshed my memory. I've fitted a two into my round case twins in the past. They are a good system for twins. I wouldn't try to force one into a single.

has anyone tried using a universal 12v CD ignition kit on a ducati? jaycar electronics in australia make one:

http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=KC5466

$21.

Whatever I put in, it will have to be timed. I use one of these, I can keep the existing points because they will only carry a switching current.

Any thoughts?

Darn! I was looking for a guinea pig to try my idea. I guess it will have to be me.

The Dynatek S made for the 750GT has two hall effect sensor/driver units that bolt on a circular plate. This goes in the points housing.
I have the plastic rotor (with tiny magnet), but need one of the sensor/drivers. I'm looking for a used one, as I am too cheap to buy the 750GT ignition.

Another option is 'Rec-Ignition' which is sold by an Australian Jeffries who makes ECUs for Moto Guzzis. It has selectable advance curves & constant dwell and offers a kit for around $100. You would need to customize trigger hardware in the points housing.

If you have 12V, a DynaS device works fine in a single cylinder application.
The photo shows one, complete with its base plate, with one module removed.
Curiously, it dropped straight into a Royal Enfield (Made in India) points housing - same dimensions.
The rotor was made from aluminium, with a magnet glued into a drilling, in case you need to make your own.
Sorry, the other module isn't available - needed as a spare.

any thoughts on my idea of using a cheap CDI kit and the existing coil and points? The points will last forever this way, and would only need to be adjusted the one time. Advance would come from the existing auto advance unit.

The Jaycar/Silicon Chip kit you refer to would not be suitable for a Ducati points type ignition system.
It needs to receive hundreds of volts from a CDI charging coil, not just 12 volts.
It might be a good substitute for the Ducati Eletronica CDI module/HT coil, with an additional coil of course, as this has the needed charging coil.

not according to jaycar, they say: "suits vehicles with points". I used something similar on an ancient VW many years, worked brilliantly for years.

I think you're confusing two different ignition kits.
KC5466 is a CDI
KC5513 is a "high energy" kit for 12V, and any type of trigger.

Both designs are from Silicon Chip magazine, that must have automotive enthusiasts on the staff.
