Re: Bevel gear markings
thanks for your thoughts. I dont want to bore people with this but it may be of interset to some.
These are macro pictures of the culprit. It does not look like its been turned on its shaft to me. The white dot was just a blob of paint i put on it to get it to show in a photo and identify it as the suspect one. this is the same gear with the paint cleaned out, I'm sure its the original dot.
As i say it was just odd that i found the only wrongly marked gear on my first ever build of a single
Good thing is i know what to look out for next time. Learning is half the fun of this game

Cheers
Paddy

____ If the bevel-gears were PRESSED-onto the shafts (or the like), then I certainly already would've mentioned anything of the sort as the likely-hood for the relocated timing-dot. _ But I agree with Eldert that the bevel-shafts are all one-single*machined piece ! _ (* Which is partly-why they were such an added-expense for Duke-engines.)

____ I'd say more than just merely "odd", (it's fully Twilight-Zone stuff) !
__ Still would like to know WHERE the-heck you found it !
" Good thing is i know what to look out for next time. "
____ If you could ever possibly find ANOTHER within your lifetime, then you'd have-to be a real-life 'Indiana Jones' !
" Learning is half the fun of this game "
____ Hope you really mean that, as I had always felt the same-way.
And that particular hunger, would've been even better fed for me,
if ALL Mototrans-made Duke-models had ALSO been imported into the U.S. ! _ (I wish Cosmo.Motors had done-so !)
Duke-Cheers,

Re: Bevel gear markings
Where did i find it ?
I bought two Elites and a couple of boxes of spares. large boxes.
It would be impossible to trace it back as it was in with 4 sets of bevel gears and three heads 250/200/200A series.
There were unidentified cams in there as well as wide and Narrow case and some Spanish parts.
A Spanish TS 200 engine with five speed cases and a 4 speed box fitted and a spacer for the fith gear with 4 speed selector.
I have sold most of the parts but i still have quite a lot of 175 A series engine bits. Almost a complete engine actually.
www.ducatipaddy.com please remove the link if its not allowed.
All the 175 parts came from an immaculately finished rebuilt engine that came with the job lot and i had planned to sell it as it was but i couldn't offer a warranty on it as i had not done the work and didn't know what the crank was like. I decided to break it !! I am glad i did. No woodruff key on the crank primary drive !! and the centre clutch basket nut finger tight. Never trust other peoples work......lol
I am building one good Elite from the parts and financing it by selling of the remainder of the bits.
As for learning ! with all these unidentified bits from A series, B series, w/c and N/c ,Spanish /Italian /Desomo and non and so on i have spent weeks trying to research the origin of each part so i could sell it and that has been the real fun for me. I love ducati engines and i love to learn all i can about them.
Thanks
Paddy

Re: Bevel gear markings
Could the mystery shaft be from a roundcase twin? I don't have pics of mine handy but if I had to guess I'd look at one of those first.

Re: Bevel gear markings
I have been warned about these offset gears before so they are not a one off. I think they are from an early motor. I will ask my pal who has a lot of singles and a lifetime of building singles.
