32mm Dellorto on a 350?

Postby STEVENM63 » Tue May 28, 2013 1:47 pm

I got a 32mm Dellorto (PH) carb with my 350 wide case project. I also got a brand new green/white cam. Can you guys tell me if this carb will work with a stock 350 engine? Maybe the previous owner was doing a racer given the new cam, so will this carb work for that application? What was the standard carb size for a 350 Scrambler?

Any other recommendations would be helpful.
Thanks,
Steven M

Hi Steve

Standard carb for the 350 SCR was a VHB 29AD.*

Others here will advise you on running a 32 PHF on a Scrambler. All I can say is that my 350 Vento uses this carb.

Ciao

Craig

(* The very first ones, up to the middle of 1969, used a 29mm SSI).

Just about any carb will work with any engine - not necessarily well.
I put a PHF34 on my 350 for a while, a kit marketed by Malossi. The engine is standard desmo, and in this form had no advantage from the big ugly pumper.
Low speed performance was worse than the 29mm carb that I put back on.

Addit: The Malossi kits were for Ducati singles and included a cast aluminium alloy inlet stub. They had 32, 34 & 36 mm versions.

My guru built my not-so-wild motor with the green/white cam, 10:1 forged (JE) piston, etc. and suggested a 34 or 36 mm (PHF or PHM), although I happen to have a 32 mm PHF which will certainly work, if not extract every last pony out of her. I need reliability and (relative) driveability before I need a podium finish in these early days.
I.e. unless your piston/compression is higher than stock and your valves are "big", etc. that cam and carb will merely make it less driveable, without the benefit of more power. Smaller carbs (and milder cams) start and run better (in general) until you're wringing the motor's neck.
Especially on a scrambler (as opposed to a (cafe') racer), I'd try to keep the low-rev drivability there.
Steve, in the NLs
