Dripping cocks

Postby Romomoto » Tue Feb 09, 2021 3:22 pm

So - I got my Mk3 running on the lift, fueled from a UV bottle.
Replaced tank and seat, fitted fuel lines, put on my riding jacket and rolled the bike out of the shop. Poured a gallon into the tank, prepared to fire it up and do a test ride, only to see gasoline dripping from both petcocks.
A quick look confirmed that the fuel is oozing out from inside the cocks.
I imagine that after 50+ years, at least the last 20 without being used, the rubber/cork/whatever is used inside these has perished. So I need to replace both petcocks. Before I go to eBay and risk buying something there, does anyone know a good source in the US for replacements?

Here are some antibiotics for your issue:

This will give you a pointer. Or is it the fibre washer between body and tank leaking?

Thanks, Bob. I confirmed that the leaks are from inside the petcocks.

You may be able to replace the rubbers inside the petcocks.

Duccout - I don't see how to disassemble these. I'll have a look again.

I replaced my seals a while back.

Put the main block in a vice with protective jaws with the nut upper most-remove the operating lever, then undo the nut-there is a spring behind so be
wary of this.

Remove this rotating component, and you can then access the duff seal.

Remove this seal carefully without damaging any mating surfaces.

Install new seal-I seem to remember there is/are small locating dowels for the seal.

Be careful not to cross thread the rotating block when you put it back in.

Thanks - but these have no nut. That's why I can't figure out how to disassemble them.

Here's what the petcocks look like:

Try bevelrubber.com.au and check under rubber products, there is a listing for singles petrol tap seals
Hope this helps
