No. Have a look at the attached, Tony. The advance unit (in green) is mounted on the end of a drive shaft (red). The shaft has a shoulder which mates with a corresponding slot on the advance unit. The shaft is driven by a gear (part # 640) located on it by a woodruff key (# 020) and is itself driven by the oil pump gear (which is driven by a gear on the crank).
The advance unit gear and the oil pump gear must be meshed together so the small dots machined into their faces line up. Look closely, and you can see this in both of the photos. If this wasn't done right, that may be the cause of your problem ....
