Engine may be trying to earth itself through the throttle/choke cables? put a temporary jumper earth cable firmly connected to battery neg and an engine bolt/screw (not an engine to frame bolt) I think you have a dodgy earth path. I'm baffled with this one. Noticed it when trying to adjust tickover. I get a reading of 1ohm between battery neg > frame > engine cases > spark plug body > carb body or any combination of 2.
