Bearings: Bevel drive housing

My cases are split and I am making a parts-to-buy list. There was slight play in the bearings of this unit and I dismantled to inspect.
The result was unexpected as the parts drawings all show conventional one-piece ball bearings. The arrangement on these are split as they are in the frame headstock but with cages for the balls. The parts in the dish are from the upper end.

Have I read the parts drawing incorrectly or is this ('62 Mototrans Elite) a peculiarity or subsequently updated bearing arrangement? I am unsure how to proceed with further dismantling or what to do with the bearings

These thrust bearings do come apart - the races just pressing together - so I think that all that has happened is that the races have separated with wear. Check the bearing numbers on the races and then cross-reference with a bearing company on-line to see if they are the same. Jon may be able to confirm if this is the case, or if Mototrans did use different bearings.

just put in 2 new bearings they are 7202 bearings

Thanks for that. Thinking about it, he bevel gears would produce an axial force. I shall continue to dismantle assuming parts as in the exploded views of the manual. You are probably correct - wear being sufficient for them to separate.

The two bearings are meant to oppose each other i think, are they in the right way?.

All now dismantled with a bit of heat. As the bearings came apart, from bottom up there were - inner ring shims >inner ring > ball race > outer ring > spacer > outer ring > ball race > inner ring >outer ring shims - in that order. I take that to be the lower of the two carries upward thrust and the upper of the two carries downward thrust.

I''ll shim the new bearings to the same total thickness as installed and keep my fingers crossed that they work out OK on first fit.

Yes, that's right. When you reassemble you have to firstly take out any play in the bearings by putting shims under the circlip, then adjusting the bevel height. I always use new circlips because they tend to rotate in their grooves and wear.
