Non-Ducati (Gilera) ignition question

Postby MayerMR » Sun Jun 14, 2015 3:53 pm

Hey fellas,

I know this is a Ducati specific site, but hopefully one of you will be able to help me with a problem I'm facing on another Italian beastie.

I've recently made the idiotic mistake of buying an old Gilera 106 SS (re-badged Sears here in the states) after personifying it and feeling bad for the state it is in...always do that! Anyway, the 106 SS is basically a bored out 98 SS Guibileo which is a very common model in Europe, but finding parts in a different language is tough...

Unluckily for me, I discovered last night that my project has been used as a donor and I'm missing the rotor and magneto. It's been giving me fits trying to replace it and I was hoping that you could tell me if you know of an electronic ignition kit that could work for this model or if I could retrofit parts from another bike?

It got me :(

It's so ugly it looks good...

I've attached some photos of my plight, hopefully these would be helpful.

The original points would be mounted on a circular plate like in the attachment (they are missing) and I assume that the flywheel (or stator or rotor...not sure on the proper terminology) would fit over it, as in the second picture.

I'd really like to try to get it running to see if the rings would free up (assuming they are stuck). Valve gapping is certainly in order as well which may get me a few more lbs of compression if they are off.

I sincerely appreciate your help!

I love the look of the bike and can see why you were drawn to it. It would look great restored to its original and "as new" splendor.

What a tough project though, given the difficulty of finding parts for a rare brand here in the US and condition it is in.

You probably found this site already:

Shipping will be expensive so trying to look ahead and get as much as you think you might need into a combined shipment would be financially beneficial.

There has to be a vintage Gilera club out there somewhere, and if you can find it they may have spares or a network of spares and vendors.

I kind of think Europe is the way to go, and fortunately the internet brings European vendors to your computer screen. The language thing can be overcome with Bing Translator and the like. I find that if you reach out for a part using the translator it is best to use simple English words that typically don't have two meanings (so the translator does not screw it up.) Then I put the translated text back through to English to make sure the meaning is true to what I intended. Be respectful, and often times you will get a response in English and you can get things out of non-English speaking countries.

You can get to eBay Italy by using www.eBay.it

After a while you get to know the Italian words for motorcycle parts and your searches will become more fruitful.

If you have any friends or relatives in Italy or Europe it might help with the occasional seller who does not want to ship to the US. For instance I have a friend in Germany and one in France that will accept items I buy that will only ship to Europe. They forward the stuff along to me and I perform the opposite favor for parts they buy in the US that won't ship to Europe. Yes, I pay shipping twice, but if it gets me what I need versus nothing at all I more often than not accept the expense a the cost of my hobby.

I think they sold quite a few of those bikes here in the states.
there are parts on eBay including a mostly complete engine for reasonable money. you could take what you need
and sell the rest. it looks like you are in for a total rebuild based on the pictures. I wouldn't be in a hurry to get it started.
it might take some time to get all the parts you need it's best to take your time and just gather the parts as you find them and not be in a rush
good luck
