That board was not potted. So, you could potentially repair the board rather than buy new. If you can confirm the rating on the capacitor, my guess is it will cost you peanuts compared to a new box. Might be a reasonable risk to take before you spring for a new one.
Could be the capacitor simply failed on it's own. I'll let the electronics experts expand on that or correct me if I'm wrong.

Rob

Hey Graham,
you can send it back to us to check the failure.
If you have the invoice, please send a copy, maybe it's warranty.
Otherwise we will offer the repair ore new blackbox.

Re: Sachse went bang
Exploding electro caps makes me think to mount them separate from other circuitry, outside the box.
That's not a neat solution though.
As well as other failure modes mentioned, given the application is a big 4 stroke single, vibration could be a factor.
Resilient mounting (eg spring, as Lucas electro mounting practice for motorbikes) or an inherently more shock resistant cap might prevent failure from this cause.

Re: Sachse went bang
I have just spoken to Sachse on the phone. I am interested in one of these systems for my 12v converted narrow case 250.
They say that they are looking into a couple of failures as they are not sure if it is the box or the installation. To be fair to them there are many electrical installations on our old bikes and over voltage could be a reason for any failure.
Given that they have sold a couple of hundred of these boxes and only had one or two failures I will be happy to buy one in the hope that I am one of the 98 or 99% of people who do not have a problem. Having said that, I have a nice new Mosfet regulator to fit to the bike and will monitor voltage for a while before I fit one.

Re: Sachse went bang
Hello Horst,
The box is in the mail to you.
This was one of Volker's systems that I fitted some years ago.
So I doubt it's a warranty?
The bike has done 4 or 5 thousand kilometres faultlessly until this failure.
Being a 450 RT there are some vibration throughout the frame.
The box was mounted under the seat on sticky backed Velcro .
Many other bikes here in Australia have many more kilometres on them without any trouble, and my RT has always started easily with the Sachse system, idled from cold and went well.
For others interested,,,
The Sachse system is easy to install and until this has been very reliable.
Regards
Graeme
