Do singles have valve guide seals?

Postby gregwils » Tue Aug 07, 2012 5:10 pm

I was looking in an old Clymer manual last night. In a drawing explosion of the head it showed something called a "valve rubber" sitting at the top of the guide, but my Ducati parts manual shows nothing. Do 250's and up have seals? I haven't pulled my head off yet to know, just curious if anyone knows the answer.

The early 4-speed 250's didn't have a valve guide seal. The guides were tapered at the top. 5-speed models and perhaps some later 4-speeds have valve guide seals that are retained by a groove machined in the OD of the top of the valve guide. The seals are just a little rubber cap, no springs or metal sleeves like modern valve seals. Matt

Just out of interest, the late Spanish singles (Strada, Forza and Vento) did have valve guide seals more like a modern car.
I. E. They had springs and steel collars and fitted onto a plain valve guide, without the groove machined in the OD at the top of the guide, as in most of the other singles.

Ok, thanks. I guess I will find out when I pop off a valve cover.

____ While the pages of your parts-manual which depict the cly.head may not,, (like the camshaft), the valve-guide rubber-seals may be found on another/different page within your particular manual.
__ The seals are the same as used on many* early 750 L-twins.
(* Some of the L-twins employed larger rubber-seals which incorporated a coiled-spring.)
