Couple of questions, how to find out year model from Ser and model numbers , what is difference between wide and narrow cases regarding year model or other reasons, and do all engines have desmo valves or do some have springs.
Thanks for your help

Re: First Ducati
The widecase engines are slightly larger in the crankcase and many of its internal parts, but some parts are identical and interchangeable - for example the cylinder and head.
An easy way to identify is by the length of the sump. The narrow case is about half the length of the engine, the widecase is the full engine length.
Narrowcase engines were not sold with desmo heads, but you could install one if you wanted to.
The first widecase engines did not have the option of desmo, it came a few years later. They were normal type sprung head engines.
Desmo heads fitted to all Ducati road bikes have springs too. Single cylinder engines had quite strong springs, but not as strong as in the non-desmo head.

Re: First Ducati
You could post a picture here. If your Ducati is close to stock then the fenders and bodywork may help forum members to identify the model followed by which years it was produced.
If you post the engine serial number, that too may help to narrow the year.
We'll also be able to tell if yours is a widecase or a narrowcase model by the engine and frame.

Well I don't know why the photos are sideways. What I've got is a frame stamped DGM7026-OM. DM450S*468248*, a tank, which I now believe is not original to frame, and as you can see, engine lower end without a head. I do think it's a good starting point.
