UK Ducati 250 mk3 1973

Postby Scottish888 » Wed Feb 07, 2018 11:17 am

Hi Folks,

I have the opportunity to buy a 1973 Ducati 250 mk3 here in the UK.
Can anyone help with where to find spares in the UK and what spares are impossible to find?
Also some advice on a value range for this type of machine, I realise the spare could be expensive so I must take this into account.

Regards

Hi (sorry, but you haven't given us your name ...) and welcome to the Forum.

For spares and advice, I suggest these should be your first 'ports of call':
1. Nigel Lacey
http://www.laceyducati.com/ducati-parts/

2. Barry Jones
http://www.classicducati.com/

Also, as I'm sure you are aware, Ducati ownership/restoration is very much an international passion with excellent spares sources and advice to be found in Italy, the US, Germany, Australia etc. I guess what I'm saying is, don't think just UK!

As for value, that's a subject I refuse to comment on! A bike is worth what it's worth to you ...

Thanks for the spares information.
Before I buy this bike I wanted to see the cost and availability of spares.
I understand that everyone values their machines differently, I was looking for a rough guide as I don't want to pay way over the odds

Hi Alex,
If you are able to put a few pix of machine and details (such as, does it run) we could give you a rundown of what might need to be done and then you can judge how much you think it is worth..
Not many Ducati Singles in UK, lovely bikes though.
I presume it is similar to this, this is my 350 Mk3.

Hello Alex

I think the hardest bits to get for the later singles is all the tin ware.
Tanks, guards, head lights. (and forks and hubs)
Apart from crank cases most bits are readily available.

Thanks all for the advice.
I bought the bike today, it is a project, complete but needs restoration
The bike is a non runner, has been laid up for 5 years and exposed to the elements, the piston could be just weather seized but that could still be bad if the rings are corroded to the liner. it was last run in the early 90s.
Your 350 mk3 looks great, my bike is the same colour..under years of dirt and corrosion.
Will post a pic as soon as I get my garage in order,in the middle of a bonneville engine rebuild..Ducati next.

Hi Alex,

Congrats on the purchase! Given the bike's history, I suggest you should assume an engine re-build.

Also, just to back up what Graeme says, it's really body parts and running gear that can be a problem. But with people like Mario Sassi and Phil Hitchcock around, even these - or modern re-makes - can be sourced ...

P.s Be especially nice to the Borrani rims (I'm assuming your bike has them). Some models are now back in production - not sure about the ones for the singles, tho'. But even if that's the case, they're not cheap!

P.p.s If you do need to do something, Howard at Disco Volante is the man to talk to. He, too Ducrappi owner - 750 GT.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the advice and the links, most helpful.
My bike is complete and with the Borani rims ( looks like anyway) spokes are rusty, nearly all the aluminium parts are covered in thick white oxide (rims seem ok though), the exhaust is solid but lots of surface rust. All the alloy and steel parts need cleaning/restoring.
Oil has been put in plug hole.
Will leave as is for now, let the machine dry out then clean up later.

Regards,

Alex
