Re: EX nut removal tool

I checked again, and it is possible for one tool to fit exhaust nuts from the 125 to 750, if it's 'wide' enough. Here's a picture of a 125 nut sitting on a 750 twin nut- same number of teeth, so the geometry is the same.

The tool I have won't fit onto the 125 nut because the small diameter is too big.

So, if you can find a tool with the inside diameter around 36mm, it will fit the 125- you'll need a tool with long teeth.

Rick,

Thank you so much for doing this. I will ask the recommended ebay seller if his "radial" tool has 36mm or smaller ID.

Brian

Hi Rick, I think if it's wide enough to reach the 125 then it may not fit over the 750's exhaust pipe OD. Am I wrong on this?

Brian,
Yes, I didn't think about that- one tool can't fit them all. The tool I have fits twin and 250 nuts, but it sits out a little on the 250 nut- still works, but not a full purchase on the 250 teeth.
The best solution would be a tool specific to each engine.
I like the tool that uses a rachet to drive it- sometimes the spacing between teeth is inconsistent, and I need to move the tool around to find the best fit, but then the fixed handle may be in a bad position- with the rachet you might lose a little leverage, but using the best set of teeth might lessen the chance of breaking a tooth off because too much force was applied to too few teeth.

Hi Rick,

Good points on the "radial tooth" tool. I had thought about the "radial" is better than the "axial" tooth tool, because the "radial" can be placed closer to the base of the fins -- stronger, and you pointed out another advantage of the "radial" version.

I found some “axial tooth” tools, but I prefer to have the “radial” one.

There are many shops that wrongly say their tools fit 100cc to 450cc. Very careless.

This tool cover more than 180* around the nut with 14-tooth. Why other tools only have 10 or less?

And this is the only one “radial tooth” tool I found, only ebay, but it only has 8 teeth!!! I really don’t understand why 8 instead of 11 or 13. I think at least 13 would fit.

I see a factory tool with complete 360 20-tooth instead of half circle:

Hi Rick,

Could you ( or anyone) please measure the gap between two teeth on your tool? I may be able to have a friend machine for me a 360 radial tool.

Thanks,
Brian

My friend finished the tool, and I was quite surprised to see it in this form which was not was my drawings!! The photo shows the tool next to a print of the radial tool sold. With a gap of 0.172" between teeth, it turns out the teeth are narrower than the gap width. I guess seeing the thin tooth, he chose to have a thicker tool with a 0.2" thick solid backing to avoid broken tooth during nut removal. Well, I wanted radial but ended up an axial

It's missing a tooth -- I think he machined it off by mistake.

The center hole is 1.4" and so I hope it will pass through the ex pipe OK. I will have some fun working on the bike this coming up holiday.

Brian

A factory type tool is always ideal I've used a strap wrench and a soft push with good results when in a pinch.
