Borrani wheel rims wanted to buy or trade.

Postby Gianni » Wed Jun 07, 2023 7:26 am

Hello all:

I am searching for 2 excellent/very good condition original Borrani wheel rims. Both are 18/36 WM2, one RM 4647 (rear), the other RM 4741 (front). I have a 1972 450 MK3D
(Silver Shotgun) and a 1974 450 MK3D (Yellow Disc Single Sport) that are complete, but lacking one correct wheel each. A cash transaction is fine, but I also have lots of trade goods available, widecase, roundcase or squarecase. I also have a very scarce non-Ducati Borrani rim, should a Laverda SFC collector be among your acquaintences. It is a Borrani 18/36 WM3 RM 4743, as fit to the rear wheel of the '74/'75 750 SFC (rear disc brake model). Lav only made 124 copies of that scarce bike. I got the rim from RickyRacer (Lance Weil) back in 2006. I would trade it even for the 2 rims I need. The rim is pre-1976 (wide flange spacing) and in excellent condition.

Hello Gianni,
I believe you can buy the correct 4647 rims in the US
They (I think)are new and can be stamped with the correct data.
Sorry I can’t remember who,,? Bucannans ?

Hi Graeme,

Been away so I missed your reply.

This outfit:

http://www.borraniamericas.com/html/motorcycle.html

Claims to be able to supply Borrani re-pops 'Hand Stamped' with the correct WM number sequence, while Buchanan's Spoke & Rim, Inc.
sells the same Italian made rims, but stamped only with the Borrani brand name. The question I have is what is the flange width on these rims?
Pre-1976, a WM3 had a flange width of 67mm, while 1976 and later, this dimension was 64mm. Since Ducati ceased production of the widecase singles
in 1974-75, the WM2 re-pops should be the same as what was last shipped by Ducati. But are they? If the flange width is the same, and the 'Hand Stamped' is equal in font and precision as the rotary rim press stamping machine originally used by Borrani, then these re-pops would likely serve my needs.
But I need to enquire further. It is difficult here in the states to find some of these scarce bits. As far as I know, Berliner, the Ducati importer brought in none of the '71-'74 MK3D singles equipped with the Borrani WM2 alloy wheels. So to Europe and OZ I must go, if I want OEM rims. I guess that I am saying that further inquirey is caled for. Thanks for replying. Gianni

Gianni,
My ‘74 450 rims pics.
Keep in mind Ducati used what was on the shelf at the time.....
Front rim
Rear rim
And a new front rim that is drilled wrong with width dimension

Graeme,

Are you saying that the 18/40 rim pictured on the Tee shirt is a new rim?

The front/rear shod rims mounted on the bike look new. They originals?

By 'new', are you meaning the Borrani re-pops? Stamped by who?

The first pic showing caliper reading isn't the 'new' rim is it? If it isn't,
have you a rim width of the 'new' rim.

Maybe I am getting closer, thanks.

The rims on the bike are, as far as I know, original to the bike.
They measure,,,,
Front, 65.6mm (allowing for dings from years of use)
Rear, 65.7mm

The wrongly drilled rim was with a pile of single parts I bought years ago. There is 1 spoke hole drilled left instead of right.
It is stamped 4647 and 40 hole.

Graeme
