Needle Jet cross drillings.

Looking at the 260 needle jet/emulsion tube on my bike i realise that there are no cross drilling holes, is this why i always have a sooty plug ? Does anyone know what is the effect of increasing/reducing the size or number of the cross drillings ?. Not having any at all is possibly the cause of the richness. Just also noticed an interesting effect, When attempting to hold an idle the motor often dies, this is much reduced if i lean the bike over a bit to the right, (raising the fuel level) From earlier checks i would say that the level is as high as it should be. Certainly the bike starts much easier if i sit astride the bike and lean to the right .I just need to get used to left leg kicks after years of Brit Bikes.Has anyone tried useing a bigger than std pilot jet on a 250 Mach1 or Mark3?.
