key dupe

Postby MotoMike » Mon Jan 10, 2011 2:28 am

My 69 450 has a key in the headlight nacelle on the left side. It looks stock to me. I have only one key and so far have not been able to find a place that can duplicate it. Any ideas? I notice that the key I have is imprinted with "Fiat"

____ I believe I've seen such a key as you mention but, I'm kinda doubting that it's an original-key... Can you post a pic of it ?

Back when I bought my Ducati 750, the previous owner gave me two keys. One was original and the other was a Fiat key. The owner told me he had the second one made at the Fiat dealer because the blanks were the same.

I don't know how this happened, but when I looked at the key, it read Ducati. I must have had it confused with the key for my Moto Guzzi which did say fiat.

I have since found a locksmith who thinks he can make duplicate keys for me at $2 each. In my research I have found that the following blanks are supposed to fit my lock.

Curtis F28
Dominion R63SP
Ilco R63sp / old number F91EH
Silca AF5A
Hillman M11
Axxess 58/1092H
Taylor F69E

I have not yet verified this but soon will. Even though these blanks are still made by a few of these companies, it appears they are considered odd balls by the locksmiths I have talked to. So the one I found that said they thought they had the blank is an old time operation that probably had it from the 60s. Some of the more junior locksmiths said they would have to order a box and it would not be worth it to them as they would never use one again. a couple others said they could order the individual keys at around $9 each.

I found a shop that will cut this key. They used a Taylor F69E blank and charged me $2.69 out the door. This is far cheaper than other prices I have found on the net. If you want them to cut keys for you they will do it by mail. Give them a call to make sure they have the blank and check pricing.
