Looking for Suggestions - Ignition Settings

Looking for suggestions on starting values for static and dynamic advance degree values (position) for setting the ignition timing on my 250 Monza.

The bike is a 1968 Widecase Monza. I don't believe there were very many of these made.

The shop manual I have posts this data for many models, but only up to 1967, therefore it covers narrowcase models only.

Years ago when I had the cylinder head apart, it was obviously fitted with large valves. I also recall noting a white dot on the camshaft. My conclusion at the time was that the bike at some point, or perhaps from the factory, was fitted with a Mark 3 head.

I am inclined to use the values from the shop manual listed for 250 Mark 3.

Is this a good starting value?

Any and all advice is much appreciated.

Kind Regards,

David

I'm going to try this the next time I go to time my 250. This writeup details more than just the timing settings but also adds great details about refining the timing without the benefit of a marked flywheel.

Yes I have read the article. I will try that procedure to check how much advance I get. But as I understand it, this is only a check. To change the advance curve you would need to change the counterweights or the springs. Neither of which can be easily sourced.

My son will attempt to make me a degree wheel in plastic on his 3D printer. If it works out, I can use to check the static advance, and full advance with accuracy.

I'll be able to strobe it as well.

Best regards,

D

Got my homemade wheel made and fitted.

Decided on the published values for a Scrambler (Motocross) in the table, 5-8 degrees static.

Hope to set it tonight.
