Hey Guys
I'm on the search for a NOS (or close to it) 250 monza piston, 74.4 (1st Overbore) and rings.
I've made the rounds at the usual sources. Any ideas??
I'd like to try to find a NOS 74.4 piston and save some cylinder wall for a future re-bore, as mine is 74.0 and just barely needing a bore.
If not, any thoughts on the 3rd party ones?
Lacey's got Omega's
GPM's are avail..
some trick one's here ... http://www.ducatiscrambler.com/2006/ricambimotore.htm
Anything stateside??
Others?? I'm looking to get one soon as that's one of the final pieces I need.
thanks in advance..
stu
p.s. my other option is a new cylinder sleeve for my really good 74.0 piston
NOS 250 Piston Source???

____ Why do you think your cyl.sleeve needs to be bored, wouldn't a good hone-job take care of it well enough? _ Since your std.piston is good, I'm thinking your sleeve-wall will be fine enough for it's job, once properly bar-honed (if not simply deglazed with a ball-deglazer).
__ I do have in stock a fair number of NOS 250-pistons, including 74.25 & 74.4 & 74.5mm sizes,, and I'm in Michigan, so shipping should be under 10-bucks.
DUKE-Cheers,

Re: NOS 250 Piston Source???
Well the cylinder has some pretty bad pitting where the rings of the old piston sat, and it has a bit of taper top to bottom from wear.
After having my Mechanic inspect and measure everything, he felt that a hone wouldn't do it, and it would need a bore.
The piston also seems to be very slightly undersize, so he felt it would slap.
It is not the original piston to the engine, it was provided when I purchased the project. It's a good clean piston, but it's used and hence some wear.
However the rings are supposedly brand new, and they look it.
Or course, I could probably run it like it is, but it would smoke a lot, so I figure I'm here, might as well do it proper.
I've come too far to stop now.
Another thought, could I put some 74.25 rings on my piston and then a good hone/bore to 74.25 on the cyl. Would that work?
So Bob, I'm interested in a piston, maybe 2 if you're willing to part. Like the 74.25, and 74.4.
Are they 3 or 4 ring pistons, and do they include rings? (I'm going to try to PM you.)
thanks again

Re: NOS 250 Piston Source???
____ Well Stu, not that I've got the details, I'm thinking your mechanic is no-doubt right about all he's told you. _ However if I myself were stuck with that which you have, I'd just have the existing cylinder-bore honed-out somewhat with a heavy-duty honer -(a process that can also be used to actually 'bore' slight amounts), and then try running the DUKE a while as is, to then see if all doesn't seem to work well enough, until a real bore-out job is actually really required.
But if you don't do your own work and your mechanic's work is costly for you, then I can understand wishing to skip such a test-out.
" Another thought, could I put some 74.25 rings on my piston and then a good hone/bore to 74.25 on the cyl. Would that work? "
____ If the piston you got is already under-sized for your current cly.bore, then especially afterwords, a 74.25 ring-set (which I also have) will not do much to stop piston-slap.
However I have used the 1st.oversize rings on std.pistons with such worn & honed cylinders, only because std.rings were then leaving the ring 'end-gap' slightly too large.
But the 1st-over -(.010") rings, (even then), are still too large, and so I'd then have to grind-down their tip-ends so as to get the minimum 'required end-gap' (between the tip-ends of the rings). _ (That's a job done by more advanced mechanics, does yours know about doing that kind of work?)
That option could save you some $$, since I'd be willing to swap ring-sets with you, if you'd just pay for the shipping.
" I'm interested in a piston, maybe 2 if you're willing to part. Like the 74.25, and 74.4.
Are they 3 or 4 ring pistons, and do they include rings? "
____ All my NOS pistons are 'complete' -(with rings, pin, clips), most are 3-ring and some (the older ones) are 4-ring,, off-hand, I only know that the 74.25-size is 3-ring.
__ The last time I listed one of my NOS-pistons on eBay for $125 BuyItNow, it sold (to a fella in Japan) within a half a day after I entered the listing !
So I'm not much interested in selling any of those I have left for less than that, but I would consider dealing, for two (or more) at a time.
__ I'll be sure to look for your PM after you think you've actually sent one to me.
Good-Cheers,
-Bob

____ Right you are Eldert, at least concerning the 74.25-size.
__ I've already sold one like that, to one of our listed members here, too !

Re: NOS 250 Piston Source???
Hi Bob
I did try to PM you, but it appears to be stuck in my outbox. Not sure what to do.
Maybe try to PM me and see if we can unclog the pipe.
I'm interested in getting a pair of your pistons. 74.4 4-ring if you have them.
I don't believe that the 74.25 will be enough looking again at the pitting in the bore. but maybe.
We can discuss more details after contact.
thanks

____ I'm thinking that that's where sent-PMs stay until the recipient logs-in & checks.
I'll do that next.

____ Why would you want two of the same size, got two cylinders?
" I don't believe that the 74.25 will be enough looking again at the pitting in the bore. but maybe. "
____ I've never seen pitting (from rusting) get so deep that the smallest over-bore would not take-out, (and I've seen rust as bad as it gets in those sleeves) ! _ In fact, I've seen some pretty deep looking gouge/scratches that came-out with just a .2mm over-bore job!
__ I also have a couple good used cylinders that are available for swapping (or that I could list on eBay).
Hopeful-Cheers,
-Bob

Why yes I do...4 or 5 of them actually. All a little worse off than my current project.
And not far from starting the restoration.
just thinking ahead...

I had a highly modified sebring drag bike, And I brought it to a Engine machinist, (jug & piston) he measured them ,then he knurled the piston skirt, Then hand finished it off with oil & very fine wet dry. I put it back together, and ran like new,
This was for racing.Would work for normal riding? Capt Paul
