1966 Scrambler NC ignition oil seal question

Postby bw_nh » Sun Jul 21, 2024 3:23 pm

Good morning List-

I am working on my 1966 Scrambler, looking to swap in the 359 automatic advance unit (AAU), to replace the 367AAU that is originally installed. I already converted the ignition to battery-power, and on advice from this list, want to change that AAU. ( Thank you Dave354 ! ).

I note an oil weep from underneath the AAU- there is an oil seal there- is it possible to pull that seal from "outside" and then press in a new seal? Or do I remove the housing and remove the seal from the "inside"?

Also, I note that the AAU has a slot drive, but it is a "centered" slot drive, as opposed to an off-set slot drive, such as my Volvos and MGs have on their distributors. As it is a "centered" slot drive, I assume I could accidentally plop in that AAU 180 degrees off... so I must be careful, correct?

Sincerely,

Hi Bob,
The oil seal on the timing side needs to be removed with the cover off so that it is withdrawn from the spindle. It’s a good opportunity to check the bevel gears for condition, float and backlash etc. When it’s off I would also pull the oil pump apart to check its condition and lock wire it closed. Make sure you don’t loose the shim washers on the end of the timing spindle.

The aau needs to be placed with the lobe up and to the right with the engine at TDC.

Best regards

Correct.
