while riding my new to me jupiter I noticed a strange noise. hard to explain it but sounded like if someone put playing cards on a bicycle wheel but it was more metallaic and changed with speed of the engine, It would come and go when i stopped it went away. I quit riding soon after and haven't had time to inspect yet. this ones got me, I hope there isn't damage to the engine.

Engine noises are the hardest thing to pin down. Is it really as slow as playing cards on a bicycle wheel? If so it sounds like (as Bob suggests) something to do with the chain.

Cheers,

Colin

Yeah might be the rear chain, checked the oil and rode it around again today ... no noise but gonna adjust the chain as it is a little loose.
just had me a little concerned bought the bike last year and only rode it a few times.

off the topic, was wondering how to tell the age of my tires... I looked but can't find any type of date... the bike is
a 69 with 5k miles could be original tires? I don't think these are made anymore,
they are both Pirelli MT 53's front 3.50-19 rear 4.00-18 both say made in Italy only other numbers are
front: 353 (20039.84) 90 , Rear: 369 (20108.30) 13

Wow I feel so stupid, the noise I was hearing was from the kickstarter. My big size 13 boots were pushing it back, it also had a hard starting problem.
I bought a new spark plug not knowing the gap set it at 35 thousnads, after reading thru some posts found out should be between .5-.6 mm so set
the gap at 22 thousands thats .55 mm. bike starts when hot! now gonna just enjoy the ride.

Don't worry, we have all made mistakes! What would life be without a few ups and downs?

Cheers,
