Narrowcase oil filter

Postby Dave354 » Sun Aug 06, 2023 7:29 am

Hopefully an easy one. Can anyone tell me what the preferred sealing washer should be for the sump oil filter? I have fitted an aluminium crush washer type, but still get a very slight weep of oil. I do t want to just tighten it and risk stripping the thread and am reluctant to use any sealant. Should I fit a fibre washer instead?
Regards

Morning Dave,

I have a '74 450 MKIII and the plain aluminium washer used to weep just a wee bit, so I moved on to a plain flat copper washer, annealed at every oil change. Still had a wee weep. So, now I use a Dowty washer and no more wee weeps.

Others may disagree, but I always use a torque wrench when tightening the crankcase oil filter, set to 20ft/lbs (27Nm). If this makes you nervous, take it to 18ft/lbs (24Nm) and then take it up the remaining 2ft/lbs (3Nm).

It may seem a lot of faffing about and I'm sure many just "Do it up tight!". But stripped threads are just a pain either way and mean you can't get out for a canter. ;)

Good health, Bill
